Should I upgrade my 940 to 955 or 965?

Basically, I have that itch again.....

I'm considering in two days to upgrade my phenom II 940 BE to either a 955 BE or 965 BE....

Basically shipped to my door I can get the 955 for $169.99 and the 965 for $189.99

Would the 955 be any less of an overclocker?

Or should I just wait it out for the new chips... The 940 to 965 really not that much of a difference... Ugh I have to find something to upgrade I have money to blow.

The 955 imo.
From what I have gathered the 965 OC's nearly the same as the 955.
Also the 965 uses more power. For some reason.
Save the $20 and get the 955.
Hope this helps.
965 is basically a 955, just a better bin. Depends how confident you are in your OC abilities.
Nah, not worth it, unless you want 790FX.

not the C3 965s they are diff than the C2 955s

I'd wait for the new chips. Try taking up smoking to get over the itch... or gum chewing.
Anyone have a date off the top of their head for the new chips?

You know, another reason I was thinking of upgrading was because of the better memory controllers on the 955 and 965's... I'm running 8gb of 1066 that I do not want to get rid of.
And I have a feeling its my chipset and memory that is mainly holding me back from hitting above 3.4ghz on my 940...

So wouldn't the 955 or 965 yield me a higher clock because they can actually handle 1066+ speeds?
I would be going for the 955 probably if I decide to do this, but will only upgrade if it would give me a better OC because of faster ram support.
965 c3 is the best bet. Clocks higher and is different from the 955. not just a higher binned 955. the 975 has not been announced but rumors have started. Thuban is due out april/may and will be ddr3.
Get the 965 C3. Hit 4GHz+ on air from many results I have seen. But that is not a guarantee.

965 also contains a different IMC (NB) than the 955 chips. So that will affect ram speeds and clocking vs the 955 chip.
Unless you're going to go to the expense of getting an AM3 motherboard and DDR3 memory it isn't worth it. The 940 is every bit as good as the 955 or 965 when running DDR2 memory and clocked to the same speeds. I've personally had my 940 to 4 Ghz on air. I'm sure with water another 940 could outdo that easily.
Nope, I'm going to be sticking with my am2+ mobo, however the 940 wasn't actually made to work with 1066 ram completely was it? Is it the memory controller on the CPU that gets stressed or the mobo?

Thats why I was thinking I would possibly get higher clocks with the 965 c3 since it was made to handle 1066+ speeds.

Or am I just confused?
anyone?
The 940 was designed to work on AM2+ boards, so yes it should work with your memory. I think you'd be better off spending that money on a good water setup than upgrading your processor.

Two reasons:
1. Water cooled 940 should overclock at least as high as a 965 on air.
2. You will be able to reuse a lot of your water system when you upgrade.

940 were not as great as OCers as 965's. currently my 940 maxes out at 3.926ghz stable, 4.100ghz suicide run on water.

Well the reason I'm asking is because mainly my OC is being limited by using 4x2gb sticks of ram and also it's 1066.

What I'm getting at, is the 965 can handle DDR3 as well as DDR2, but the 940 can only handle up to DDR2 1066.

So wouldnt upgrading to the 965 render my memory issue moot?
Your clock speeds aren't affected by your memory. I'm sure you could get 4.1 Ghz on water cooling with the 965 BE (C3).
im also wandering about how well the new 955 95w c3 chip overclocks when its released Q2 of '10
I AM ECSTATIC
!

I went with the 965 125w and just slapped her in, I'm hitting 3.7 on stock voltage!!!!

With the 940 I could not get over 3.4ghz STABLE no matter how much voltage I threw at it.

So I guess my theory is true, the updated memory capabilities of the 965 allowed my 8gb of 1066 to work right and now I can hit 3.7+

OMG I'M SO HAPPY
