Silencing a Lanbox

2443 Views 12 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  nderscore
So, I am working on making my lanbox lite quiet, and I am having some problems. For reference, it is my sig rig.

So far, I have 3x 60mm antec stealth fans, (replacing the stock fans) a coolermaster geminii s, and I have replaced the stock cooler on my 4850 with an accelero s1 rev 2 (passive).

I was very excited and booted up...

and it was still noisy. No vibration or rattling, just too loud for me.

What is my next step?

Thanks.

Give fans lower voltage, like if they're 12V fans, give 7V(a bit complicated) or 5V(easy).
Remove fans you don't need.
Change fans for proper 120mm ones and lower their voltages.
Put up silencing dust-filters and rubber bolts for the fans to reduce the vibration.

Sounds good. Sadly I dont have any space for the 120mm ones, just 60mm fans.
acoustic padding. should help alot. also fan silencers(i like the rubber square thing)

this might be a little off topic, but is there a difference between 92mm and 90mm fans? will they screw into each other's mount?

2mm is tiny
Did you localize the source of the noise? Try turning off all your fans so the only one that is active is your PSU's. Turn on your computer and see if that was the main culprit. If not, then reconnect the fans systematically until you located the source of the problem. No matter how many quiet/silent components you have, you will always notice the loudest component.

So I tried Nderscore's method this morning.

The loudest fan is def. the 90mm fan in the front (and yes, its 90mm, not 92, I emailed tt.

The 2nd loudest is my ocz 135mm fan in the PSU.

what do I do about these?

Thanks for all the help guys!

Quiet fans become loud fans if there is some obstruction of its inlet/outlet flow of air. The 135mm fan on the OCZ should be quiet enough (Globe Fan S1352512H which seems to be near inaudible by itself), so I presume the sound you hear from the PSU is the result of its close proximity with the Gemini IIs cooler. I had this problem in my SG01 (undervolted 92mm Noctua @500rpm which spun in the opposite direction of an undervolted 120mm Scythe S-Flex F @500rpm) which produced a slight fluttering sound even though the two fans were inaudible by themselves. This leads to the question of whether the 90mm fan in the front is naturally loud, or is it due to the obstructions caused by the front filter and hard drive cage. If it isn't too much of an inconvenience, try taking the front fan out of the case and power it on to see if produces the same amount of noise in free air.
