After seeing this discussed elsewhere. The theory is, the purpose of Defender for Linux is for it to run on a Linux server, protecting the Windows machines that connect to it, not to protect the machine it's installed on.
Wow trying to understand the topic instead of just bashing Microsoft and showing us your Linux boner? That's not allow s here.

You mean like Clam? Thanks M$py for bringing a tool to Linux that has existed for a very long time and is mediocre at best.
