Hi guys,

I have some money to burn and I literally need an answer before the weekend!!

Do I buy a pair of GTX480's or a pair of 5870's?

If I got the 5870's, I might also get a PhysX card as well.

The dialemma is....

Are a pair of GTX480's worth the extra £200 compared to a pair of 5870's?

Cheers

UPDATE:

I HAVE ORDERED A PAIR OF ASUS GTX 480'S

I would skip the GF-100's entirely, and the 5870 is overpriced.
Your 4890 should hold you over until the 6890 releases.

Oh wait they didn't release a 5890...dang.

Looks like your gonna have to settle with a 6870. How terrible!

As much as I like your theory, I want new cards NOW. I think you may be under estimating the current gen's power.

If you must buy NOW, the GTX480's will easily win.

Just a suggestion, how about SLI 470's? They should pretty much slaughter any game, cost less, use less power, and has physx.

Get the 480s.
Personally ive never had any issues with ATI drivers until I set up a Crossfire system. Thats when they give me problems. So i always go single card ATI.
Get the 480s. Its well worth the extra 200 for all the features you will get.
Sure, PhysX, and all the tessellation etc may not be utilized very much, but you will have it if you need it.
Not to mention that 480s in SLI will give you more power than 5870s in CF.

I personally don't think the extra cash is worth the sli 480s. I would either get 1 480 or 1 5870 and then wait for the 6 series to come out.

The thing that puts me off 470's is how much more powerful the 480's are than them.

Do you play any games (or do anything) that you find would need more power than a 4890? If so, what?

A single 470 would be my suggestion if you are just itching to upgrade. Obviously the 480s are the more powerful but the advantage from one 470 to two 480s is negligible on your monitor and for most games.

I will be benching, I play most new games which are around and ones that come out, like to mess with Crysis and am considering starting folding.

Do two 470's really perform like two 5870's?

The 4xx series scales very well in SLi, so much so that while a single 470 is slightly less performance than a single 5870, two of them outpaces two 5870 by about the same margin. Obviously different games have different results but in general, the 470s are faster. Either way, the difference is not usually noticeable and either one would be a hefty upgrade for you. If you plan to fold, the 470s are a no-brainer (and 480s are even better
).
