Slots

Ive moved onto a new case, including a new CPU cooler.

Now, ive got a problem.

When I try to place my RAM sticks into the blue slots of the motherboard, I dont get any display on startup followed by 1 medium/long and 2 short beeps.
Tried separate sticks in both blue slots, all the same.

One of my black slots is covered by the CPU cooler, but the other is fine.
When I insert either of the RAM sticks inside the black slot, system boots fine and hence I am writing this topic now.

My motherboard is Asus M4A78LT-M 760G

Is it possible that the slots got shortened while moving all my parts or something, should I buy a new motherboard ?

Everything is connected properly before someone asks.

Do you have the motherboard manual? It should tell you exactly what the beeps mean, might help shed some light on the situation.
The RAM might need to be in certain slots for the motherboard to boot

No, because all the difference between the slots is the colour. For the sticks to be reckognizable as 4GB they need to be in same-color slots.

And about the beeps, (Ive got AMI Bios) 1 long and 2 short apparently are video failure, so thats ruled out because on black slot the GTX 560 works like a gem.

Change mobo ?

That's what I meant. RAM may require populating the black slots to boot, on certain boards

Note that utilising a black & blue slot will run the RAM in single channel, and you will lose a good chunk of performance as a result
Mhh yeah if you could try the ram in both black slots that would be good. Will it not fit with the cpu cooler on, or can you just not insert it with the cooler in the way?
No, the cooler is too big and consumes the entire first black slot.

Should I bite the bullet and go for a new mobo ?

Edit: As far as I remember, ages ago I might have used the blue slot. Now im not sure, but both of them definitely dont work.
Well I guess you have a few options. You could remove the CPU cooler, test the RAM in the black slots and if it does work, consider a different CPU cooler as this would most likely end up cheaper than a new motherboard.

Other option is get a new motherboard, which obviously is a bit more work. Could also mess up windows installations if changing motherboard I guess - thats worth checking out first. On the possitive side of things, you could end up with a better motherboard that can take more RAM and overclock better should you want it too. Also you could re-use the old motherboard on another system if it did work.

Im 99% the other black slot is working because before I fit in this cooler I used both my RAM in the black slots.

Sigh ;/ Think ill just buy a new mobo then

Thanks

Ah, quick update:

Hmm, ages ago (I think) I tried fitting in the sticks into blue ram slots and I might have not put them in properly (I was doign this to troubleshoot) and there was a slight burning smell coming out of the area of the slots. Luckily RAM works all fine.

Could that be it ?
