I have a Sony CRX-320E CD-R/RW drive, it says it will write at 52x, so does Optical Info, but whenever I try the most Nero (...or any other program) will do is 40x – I burn a lot of CD’s and wondered if this could be fixed, and a search of the internet showed that to enable the “52x†mode I have to hold the eject button in for X seconds, this used to work, but now I can’t remember how long I have to do it for, so I decided to see if I could find a firmware update for it – But where do I find a firmware update for it? How do I install it?

Check with the maker of the device for a "firmware" update.

Several of the posts I found on that drive were compalints, including a firmware update just caused more problems.
I guess you either live with it or buy a new device.

I recommend an LG dual layer drive....they burn CDs FAST, and it's the best burn I've ever got. The only coasters I've made have been my fault, cause I didn't use the right software to convert the dvd..and it just grabled it lol. The burner is AWESOME!

CD Burner (Well, DVD burner) or sound card (as a pose to AC97!) :S

I have a set of Creative P380 speakers - would a soundcard make a sound quality difference with them?

I have similar speakers to you (same sub box anyhoo), a good sound card eg: Audigy 2 ZS or better will free up a little CPU power and make the music etc sound a little clearer.

I don't mind my AC97 at the moment, set it up just right and it's grand
