Slow internet?

569 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Verrater
So I'm having this problem for a few days now. My internet is really slow!

I have a 20mb/s unlimited internet connection but my download speeds never go over 300kb/s. Big deal you say? I used to get 1200kb/s!

I did virus scans, spyware scans, reseted the router/modem, disconnected from the internet and reconnected again, released my ipconfig and renewed it and flushed my DHCP.

So I'm all out of options here... please help!

PS I'm downloading with Newgroups, Torrents and normal FTP... and none of them ever reach over 300kb/s! Plus I'm lagging quite often in my games!

I see you have Planet, is that ADSL, cable?

Also which router do you have, if you have any?

Recently I purchased a new router and my download speed increased by 1350 kb/s (from 1000 kb/s to 2350 kb/s). I had no idea a router had this much of an impact.
Is the service new?
Are you close to one of the companies boundary lines for service?
If so, the company maybe be throttling you back because of your distance from the nearest hub. The only cure for this is to wait and reset your modem and router once a week.

Have you recently cleared your cache in IE or firefox?
I know it sounds stupid but it does happen. This can be throttling your download speeds.

Do you have a firewall or any kind of internet monitoring device?
Disable them temporarily and try to see of your speeds increase.

Your service may be throttling p2p.
Call your isp and ask them anonymously if they throttle p2p downloads.

Run adaware, ccleaner, and spybot. See if it clears anything out.
Go to run type:"MSconfig" look at your "start up" and "services" disable everything that's running a pre-instance of itself to help it load faster or anything you can't verify is a valid program by using this site:
http://www.processlibrary.com/

Finally if all else fails:

Call your isp and ask them to send out a tech. It takes five minutes and they usually charge you zip.

My router/modem (its a 2-in-1) is a THOMSON SpeedTouch 780. I have ADSL.

Well its only my downloading, while speed test works fine. I've run every cleaner and cleared out my FF cache. I already check my startup programs and I'm only launching Windows Defender (Firewall only), Symantec corp v10, Speedfan, ultramon and my audio panel.

Yes I did disable my FW to see if it helps and... nope.
Bump.

This is really annoying!
As someone above has already suggested, you should call your ISP and check with tech support on this issue to verify it is not something they can fix.

Then how did I get 11000kb/s on speedtest.net?

I don't know. Why do you not want to explore all of your options?

Run a trace route to one of the game servers or normal FTP's you are using and post the results back here.

Amsterdam is quite fun, you get used to it once you've lived near it for almost 19 years.

With trace route you mean... what? I never go over 20 ping if that is what you mean.

Also when I download from multiple sources the overall download speed drops to around equal to 300kb/s.

As i posted before it's quite possible your isp is throttling your downloads.
