No, there's still no sanity. Sanity would be not having a mandatory filter at any point. Sanity would be the government doing their part to make sure the websites get taken down and the people operating them get thrown in jail. A filter is just an excuse for: "we don't want to do our jobs and enforce laws."

Actually, we go to the polls soon. Chances are this proposal with go down... with the govt that has proposed it

And to be fair, the Govt has jailed people and taken down child porn websites in this country. Other countries, where most of the site are... havent been as zealous.

That is a good point. I suppose I can see the need for it, but they should be required to provide a list of the URLs that were blocked and a reason for why it was blocked -- and the list should be made publicly available at all times. I guess the reason question is whether or not the government could be trusted to do that (if it's the US, the answer would be no; not sure about Australia).

Unfortunately its only very temporary as others have pointed out.

Personally I have no issue with filtering out bad stuff like the Telcos have just agreed to do. The issue I have is where does it end? Who decides what "Bad Stuff" is? Some of it is obvious.... other things (anti political stuff, euthenasia etc) are not so clear.

Where do we settle? Its a tough one...
