I got an OEM copy of Vista Home Premium and want to install it over my 30 day trial of XP. I'm going to do a clean install since I just built this one and there's no info to lose. Do I need a partition, should I use a partition, and how much space do I set aside for the partition, and how do I know how much space I need? Also, what is the OEM preinstallation kit, do I need it, and does it cost extra if needed? I know, it's a lot of questions but I don't know alot yet.

Just boot from the Vista dvd. It will take you through the install process. I didnt make any extra partitions personally.
You can just let the Vista install format the hardrive, erasing the XP installation. Some people, myself included, like to either use one hard drive for the OS and system proggies, but then another drive for STUFF. If you have a large enough hard drive, you can partition it out, making it work like two drives. That way, if you have to reformat later on, all of you STUFF is safe on another partition.

On my 120GB HD, my Vista and Program Files take up about 60 gig or so. I'm not sure how much you install, so it all depends. You have a 500GB, so I would partition about 120GB for the OS and Programs, and then partition the rest for your STUFF.

How are your temps with the oc on the Zalman coolers. I'm looking to buy a cooler. My stock temp after 2 hours of Prime was 63C. I was wondering what it would take to get close to 3.6, 3.8 or even 4.0. (I set it to 3.6 and wow was it a lot quicker at everything... but it set of the temp alarm after 20 mins on Prime) I'm addicted now, what should I buy?

If you find the OCZ Vindicator for cheap, the Noctua, or there's even a TRUE for sale on OCN, then you should pick one of those up

:edit:

depends on your budget, but you can specify a budget for a HSF here and people will help you out

A few people will say that the Zalman 9500 is kinda outdated, but I get idle temps of 29c-32c depending on how warm it is in my apartment, and load temps are 54c-55c after an hour of OCCT. I thought I would need a newer cooler too, but until I can afford a copper TRUE, I'll stick with my Zalman!

About a hundred if it can get me to 4.0 - give or take.
I set aside a 20GB partition for Windows Vista Ultimate X86. After it installed and booted for the first time, the partition was already up to about 14GB full. After updating everything, installing drivers and trying to trim back the fat, I've only got about 2.8GB left on the partition.

So... don't go for anything less than 20GB for a Vista install. I figure 30GB should be comfortable. Windows Setup itself actually recommends at least 12GB for an install.

You'll also want to set aside seperate partitions for your media files and applications. My 250GB HD is set up as 20GB for Windows, 100GB for media (movies, photos, videos), and 120GB for apps. Basically set aside that 30GB or so for Windows, then slice in half what's left for media and apps, depending on how much of each you think there will be.

In the future I'm hoping to grab a 500GB SATA2 HD as well to join my 250GB. I'll probably split the 250GB in half for Windows and applications, then the entire rest of the 500GB for media.
