So here's the deal, I'll be selling the computer in my signature pretty soon so I can build a new one, the thing is I saw the benchmarks for Crysis 3 I was honestly blown away, since Crysis 3 is the first of the so-called 'next-gen' games judging from how well it's performed would it last longer than a i5-3570K in terms of gaming?

Perhaps next-gen games are going to be more mult-threaded, is that a reasonable assumption?

I won't be building a system after my next one for quite a bit of time so naturally I'll want it to last, I don't really want to wait for Haswell since I'm looking to build this around the end of March and June is just so far away.

Please try to keep this as civil as possible, just help a fellow OCN'er out!

Well it's the first of the 'next-gen' games coming out and it's already pushing today's hardware. I think they didn't bother testing the Ivy Bridge CPUs since they're not much faster than the Sandy Bridge ones, give or take a 5% or so difference.

I'm selling my current computer as I'm moving and it's not worth the trouble to bring along, that's why I'm looking to build a new one when I do.

There is no new major hardware coming out in the time frame you are giving. What new thing would be there to pick. Its still 3770k vs 8350 unless you went for an extreme line.....

The 1090/1100t is like a 3 year processor and it performed really well in that chart.

The CPU you have is one of the best consumer CPU's out there and its not even a year old.

I was happy that AMD did good in that benchmark, but cmon now man. All those chips were at stock anyway.

Edit- Amazed at the Bloomfields still kicking so hard at stock, im kicking myself for not keeping that platform longer.

I have another computer I can use till then if I do decide to wait but wasn't Haswell supposed to be only a 5% improvement over Ivy Bridge in terms of performance?

Let me put it this way

A Q9550 @ 4GHZ is probably very similar to a FX 6100 at stock

Release Date March 2008
Current Date February 2013

Bloomfield is from November 2008 and is still near the top of that chart even at stock

See what I am getting at? You are worrying over nothing.

The whole CPU buisness is a shame anyway, some bored teenage kid in Florida named Chipp or something started this site and im sure he is even sick of computers at this point. He likes the ad revenue now so why give the site up? No one who comes to this site wants to "really" be here bro, I thought you knew that. Most of the
people on high end systems just use it for the sole purpose to argue about the 8350 vs 3770, etc.and then look at porn between rants, buy steam games they never play and get a complex about the computer thing they bought a few months ago is now inferior based on a benchmark. Did that just happen in this thread?. I believe it did.

The person who came to this site once November 2008 and bought a i7 920 and a 4870 and never came back is the happiest PC gamer alive today. Thats the only thing anyone here has needed the last 5 years to play games correctly.

No one here is happy with what they have because of the culture around here, its a sickness, dont even get Haswell. That random guy with the 990x is worried right now about something. Why should he be, BECAUSE HE IS STUCK HERE to be reminded how someone has a 3770k that performs for cheaper than his CPU. He has got to justify his purchase for the next year and this is the perfect place to do so. He will participate in a 60 page rant if he has too that will be edited by an arrogant British man when your asleep. He doesnt even play computer games anymore because of this place, his original intent, everyones original intent. God Bless/Help us all.

Come here 5 years later and look at benchmarks for Crysis 7 with your 3770k in the middle somewhere. I am serious when I say this.

That's clearly a game that can utilize every core that you throw at it. That an 8350 or a Thuban would do well under those conditions is not surprising.

An FX-8350 might be more future proof than a 3570K, in the sense that all software is moving in the direction of being more and more multithreaded. This is what AMD has been banking on all along with this architecture. But I don't think that five years from now, an 8350 will destroy a 3570K on then-current software. I can believe it will be faster, but not enough to blow a 3570K out of the water.

Pick whatever you like best. It's going to last a long time either way.

I wouldn't worry about that. Quad-cores are pretty much mainstream today, and that's what software developers will be targeting for several years to come. Intel has most of the market, and their focus in the consumer market is on dual-core i3's and quad i5's. AMD offers more than four cores because their chips have a lower IPC and need the extra cores to keep up. Even in three or four years, with everything optimized for quads, the Intel cores are still going to do more work than the AMD cores do. The 8350's four additional cores might make it a winner, but it won't be by much.

We're just now getting to the point where a single-core CPU is obsolete because everything is targeted for a dual-core, and we've had dual-core CPU's since 2004, and in the mainstream since 2005.

Alright thanks, Haswell it is for me!

Not looking forward to the extortionate launch prices though.

I'm selling my current computer as I'm moving and it's not worth my time to bring it with me so I'll be selling it and building a new one.
I see. In that case I would just wait for haswell since its already march.

I don't know what you guys are talking about, I saw some good gains going from 4ghz i7 920 to 5ghz FX 8350 in gaming.

FX 8350 does poorly in older games that are single threaded, and better in newer games that are more threaded. When the FX does bad, it's offering playable frame rates on old games. When the Intel quad does bad, it's offering a worse experience on newer games that seems to be gradually getting worse.

However my vote is to wait for Steamroller if you can. The only thing Intel has to offer is 3% to 5% increase in quad cores every year if you're staying on the lower end socket. AMD is offering a lot more for the enthusiast right now, you're going to have a lot more fun overclocking it and playing with AMD than Intel.

Intel overclocking is very easy and it looks like Haswell is going to hit the same walls IB did. It's just that Haswell has a strap you can play with for base clock to CPU and that's it.

Consider what it takes to overclock 3570k. Raise multiplier, maybe raise vcore, and you're done. Notice how AMD forum still has a thread where people are discussing how to overclock the chip and Intel is just about new products? There's a ton of things to mess with with PD and it all affects performance. I've seen my CB11.5 score jump 10% at the same CPU frequency just from messing with things.

But if you still want to go Intel, I suggest you at least go with a 8 thread model. But the little research I've seen done on the subject leads me to believe that HT increases frame time by a good amount.
