Working with a 478 P4 2.6C on an ASUS P4SD series board. Since 478 chip prices are pretty cheap (around $100 or less), I was looking at upgrading. Question is, given the choice, what would you choose:

478 P4 3.0E 1MB L2 for ~$80
478 P4 3.4C 512KB L2 for ~$110

I haven't been able to find a 3.4E with 1MB L2, otherwise the choice would be simple.

Well, considering I got my 805D for less than either don't buy them. Save, save save. Just my 2c.

Yeah, if I had the money, I'd be getting a new board, too. Just trying to squeeze a little bit extra out with what I have. $100 I think my wife will let me get away with. $300 may get me in trouble.

Where did you find the P4 3.4ghz for $110? The cheapest place I saw was $125 OEM.

Definitely go for the 3.4C . Northwood was a lot better trust me. The 1mb cache makes no difference what so ever. One of my mates has a 3ghz prescott and i have a 2.8ghz northy, and my Northwood has better scores at everything. Take a look over at www.tomshardware.com they have the cpu charts to prove it.

Edit: Oh damn they don't have socket 478 cpus on there anymore .....

Yeah that's right. So I'd just stick with the cpu you have already(I presume it's northwood) or go for that 3.4ghz one.

I think B is Northwood as well except it has a 533mhz FSB as apposed to the 800mhz fsb the C version has.

2.6 GHz to 2.8 GHz = $50 (used); 2.6 GHz to 3.4 GHz = $110 (new) . . . I say go for new.

@ saxdr I'm basically in the same situation as you right now, except my mobo ONLY supports Northwoods, so Prescotts are a no-no for me. I have that exact same link from ewiz except it was $125 yesterday and I'm guessing it somehow got lowered to only $110 today. If only I had that much money right now I would definitely buy it before the price goes back up again.

And look, I think we have the same CPU right now too. Did you overclock it yet? If so how far?

Mine's a Sony . . . the Asus P4SD-VX board BIOS as is doesn't support OC. I've heard that you can load a different BIOS that will allow you to change the clock.

I know the chipset for the board is i865. Does that support Prescotts? I'm also not sure if I want to do Prescott after reading a lot of reviews that the Prescotts run hotter than Northwoods. My current set up does not lend to good cooling. I'm going to have to get some more circulation in the little cubbyhole area where my computer sits in my desk.

If you want more bang for your buck, buy a new board and not a chip. That 2.6c should hit at least 3.4ghz with a nice board. So Id spend the money on an overclocking board and gain more then just CPU power!!

Six months later, I gave in and bought a P4 3.4GHz EE and a Zalman CNPS7000B (AlCu) for about $165. Brought up the temps by about 5C . . . thinking about upgrading the fans. Not too bad . . . after an hour of BF2, the CPU temp is around 57C.

My 3.0E Prescott totally destroyed my 3.2 N/wood at everything including overclocking.
