Hi guys I have the Sapphire R9 285 Dual X. The thing is after overclocking and increasing the power limit by 20% it still throttles and I still have a lot of voltage to play with so I wanted to increase the power limit to 50% which I have done for other R series cards via VBE7. However, since this is a Tonga GPU VBE7 doesn't support the bios file. So is there any software out there for editing the bios of the R9 285?

I do have a dual bios. RBE doesn't support it. I don't mind flashing it to any bios or even bricking the GPU since un-bricking it would be easy as I have a motherboard with on board graphics.
So far at 1100Mhz with stock voltage here is my 3D Mark 11 Score-
The bios hack seems to have worked. The power limit is now at 50% and throttling has stopped. Thanks you so much

The R9 285 isn't that bad of a card. It actually has a lot of potential but is held back by its bios.

Glad to hear it worked. Thanks for sharing.

There isnt much info on OCing the R9 285. This is the first time Ive seen the power limit increased. The core voltage can be increased beyond 100mv with special settings using MSI afterburner. Ive seen two people using about 130mv to get 1200 on the core. Seen one push beyond 1600 with LN2 cooling! His firestrike score was 10k! That is more than a stock 290.

I havent seen any 380 bios being shared.. could be interesting.

I have a powercolor r9 285 that I will play around with soon. Ill share my results when I am finished.

Good luck pushing yours.

you should upload your bios on here and on techpowerup as there is only 3 bios on there and only for sapphire

for the voltage you can make it go as high as you like by adding some numbers on the exe i think it is

The voltage of the R9 285 is unlocked to +100mv in afterburner and 1200Mhz on the core is easily do-able. I'm hoping to reach 1250Mhz . This gpu is really hot in terms of temperature though...

I can share my bios when I get a chance. I am currently traveling so i have only been researching.

The temperature on a stock cooler is likely going to be an issue . When I OC cpus I want them 100% stable during the most extreme torture tests, but I think we can keep the 285 OCed in games despite not being 100% stable in say furmark.

The shortcut command string is as follows..

/wi6,20,E6,19

Credit to sidewinder and AMDmatt for sharing this.

The number 19 can be changed to change core voltage. It is a hexideicmal number. Each decimal number is a 6.25mv step. I dont advise trying this unless you are certian you understand this.

What's the max temp that you have seen on your 285 ducegt? Have you managed to edit the bios via software?

I dont remember very well to be honest. I was able to run furmark for 10 hours at 1046/1500 with default voltage and fan control.

No I havent changed anything with the bios. My bios is the original. It seems we can change everything with software (without editing the bios) but It still would be nice to edit the bios like I use to with a 5850.

I've edited the bios for all the cards that I've used. I've managed 100Mhz at stock voltage so far.

I haven't had much luck. I updated drivers to 15.7 which were released today before doing 25 tests at various settings.

I did the registry hack to set power limit at 50% but it doesn't seem to do anything. The highest benchmark score I got was with +70mv 1100/1500.

I was able to bench at 1142 +150mv, but my score was considerably lower. At 1200 I had artifacts with +150mv and didn't push any further.

Temperatures peeking at 85C with fan on 100%. Ambient of 26C. 19% gain from my stock to best OC in 3dmark vantage. 5.7% gain in catzilla 1.4.
