No, the 5850 can not clock higher per say, but rather just as well. However, the 5870 is still a better card and will outperform a 5850 (margins are subjective). Also, in order to get it into your 300 you will have to utilize the space in your middle HD area, so move whatever devices you have in that area to the bottom. The 5850 will be less of a tighter fit, but should work in your given space.

could somebody remind the diffrence between a 4850 length and a 5870 length?

I think the card is going to run into one of the side rails of the HDD tower also which wont allow for it to fit inside of the HDD tower

My friend has a 5770 in an Antec three hundred, it fits pretty well, but I don't know how much longer a 5870 is than a 5770.

4850 = ~9.75"

5870 = ~11.2"

its so close that its almost impossible to tell, it could be that if i sand the edge of the HDD tower then it would fit... but i just dont know.

Could somebody produce some pictures of their own with proof? +rep to whoever can.

Just for reference, here is mine in my 900. If you see how I only have about an inch of clearance, this will prove a hindrance in your 300. The 5870 would extend into your HD cages.

I just installed a 5870 in my Antec 300. It fit, just barely. Obviously you cant have a harddrive installed in the drive cage at the same level. I'll take a picture when I get home in an hour, unless someone else does first.

Diamond 5870 in Antec 300. It does stick slightly past the drive cage, but its not obstructed by it.

(It's a build in progress, still waiting on PSU and SSD)

My brother has a GTX 260 in an antec 300 and it fits fine. It is 10.5" long and according to http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3643&p=2 the 5870 is the same length, so it should fit fine.
