[SOLVED] WINE 1.6 + WoW + OpenGL = Black Screen

2568 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Xaero252
Ok, I've just upgraded my Linux Mint 13 WINE installation to version 1.6. Now when I start WoW with the OpenGL option I get a black main screen, with the usual WoW mouse pointer still visible. Has anyone else experienced this, and how did you overcome it?

Many thanks.

EDIT:

Solved it. The nVIDIA drivers were also updated, but the previous kernel module was still running. A reboot solved the issue. Obviously the drivers won't tolerate even the smallest mismatch.

Rofl. That's sad :C
Yeah, Nvidia blobs seems quite fussy about wanting restarts. More so than most of the other graphics drivers from what I've seen.

With good reason. ATi drivers are a mess because they try and do userspace with a kernel hook. nVidia blobs are pure kernel mode. This gives them direct hardware access. With the number of memcpy and pointer calls they have - they could easily corrupt firmware with a version conflict. It's pretty easy to just install them and restart X though.

This is another showcase example of a system that will be made better with Wayland; online driver refreshes a la Windows. One blank for VGA bios reset, one blank for new driver init. X doesn't play nice with that so rmmod nvidia && insmod nvidia will just result in a black screen. The cleanest solution though (since restarting X doesn't always work) is to kexec boot. Which I highly recommend. Its much faster than a full system reboot. Ex. 10 seconds on my system with several large volumes - vice a full 1m reboot (I have 2 bios's to wait through, and a full raid array init to wait through...)

Anyways yeah, I was gonna drop in earlier and let you know to reboot if you'd updated your drivers or kernel - but you already found the solution I see.
