Some questions about Backward compatibility in PS3

Well, I've been investigating a lot about the PS3, cause my dad is gonna buy one in April when he travels to USA. I heard that the best model about backward compatibility with PS2 and PS1 is the 60GB version, because it had some chip that makes hardware emulation in PS2 games, in spite of software emulation (which the old 80GB model does).

my questions are:
1) Can I get a NEW (not used) 60 GB PS3 nowadays (I know, they are not longer being produced, but maybe not so many people buys PS3s and there are still those models for sale)? Or at least the OLD 80gb model? Or will it be practically impossible?

2) Is it true that the new 80GB model doesn't even have Software based backward compatibility? As it is "software" emulation, is there some way to get the PS2 games emulated on the new 80gb PS3s (I imagine some kind of patch or something) ?

3) (nothing to do with what I've written before): Do PS3s tend to break? This is an important question, because of the warranty and stuff, because if it breaks we will have to send it to USA's Sony to get it repared and would take a loooooooot of time. .... if the answer is "yes, they tend to break", can you recommend me some Blu Ray player which looks like will last a lot of time??

thanks!!

1) To get a new version of the older models is pretty much impossible. Your only chance is if someone on Ebay hoarded like 5 models away in his closet and is trying to sell them new in box since production has stopped. No retail store sells them now.

2) With the models that are currently for sale, you will not be able to play PS2 games.

3) PS3's generally do not break. I've heard that maybe around 1%, most sources say less than 1%, are dead at, or die soon after purchase. For the most part, you don't have to worry about a dead PS3.

*Edit* I did a Google search on PS3 failure rate and at least four different sites stated that Sony claimed the failure rate of PS3's to be at about .02%.

oh no, that means I won't be able to play Metal Slug Anthology, Mortal Kombat Armageddon and other great PS2 games on the PS3s they're selling. noooo

3) Well, at least that's a good thing.

In PSP subject there is a lot of homebrew, emulators and stuff, is there any chance that some guy invents a PS2 emulator for ANY ps3???? or that would be practically impossible?

thanks for your answer. +reputation

This is why I ran to the store and bought the 80gig MGS4 package when I heard about no more BC. It was worth it IMO.

of course it was worth it. But now the only way to get a old 80gb / 60gb NEW console is to travel back to time
. I guess that Sony do that cause they want people to keep buying PS2s. Well, I won't buy a PS2, so that I won't buy any PS2 game, so you loose money with me Sony (and I bet this happens with loooots of more people).

damm, today no one can't have the luxary of buying a console any time one wants; they will keep reducing the number of features it incorporates. .... It's almost like .... they hate people like "you want the most complete console?, well buy it NOW, or it will be too late and we will reduce features because we are evil
" (and now it's too late
)

Coming from Sony, I wouldn't be surprised if the next model of PS3 they realase can't play DVDs, and the Sony representatives say "DVDs are old, buy Blu Rays". ..... and people would still buying it just because "it's Sony, and Sony is good"
