The advantage being you get more air going through the heatsink which will help drop temperatures. The downside being possibly increased noise and it naturally takes up more space in your case.

How effective it is depends on the fans in question and the heatsink in question.

Check out Ehume's work on testing oodles of fan setups and configurations with the Prolimatech Megahalem. A lot of the configurations are various fans in push-pull on the heatsink. It seems though, at least with the Megahalem, that adding another fan only drops things by a few degrees depending.

A hyper 212+ with a set of gentle typhoons AP-14's/ AP-15's would absolutly be the ticket set-up in push pull. A low cost good preformance cooler sanwiched between two gt's....win.
