Back then, even giving an AMD gpu a core would halve the CPU ppd and the GPU would not make up the difference. Is that still the case? (Reading as I am typing, it is cold in here and when I had all three boxes folding it was a sauna in here in winter with the heat off.) Decisions.
I believe that you should be able to make up the loss of 1 core with the AMD GPU. You will probably get 8-10K out of the 7950 (depending on overclock) and will likely only lose ~6k from taking the 2500k from SMP 4 to SMP 3. Other considerations are that as mmonnin mentioned we have reason to believe that the amount of 'work' or 'science' being done is currently undervalued according to the points AMD GPUs get (i.e. AMD GPUs are better for folding than their points would have you believe), but you should also know that you will be using much more power with the AMD GPU and SMP 3 compared to just running SMP4 and no AMD GPU.Originally Posted by dave12

Does SMP7 with a pair of GTX 460s still outperform an i7 by itself. I truly am trying to read up on what has changed but the damn site search is giving me 3 year old posts. Is there an up to date FAQ?Originally Posted by juano

No, there isn't a whole lot that is up to date here.
Appreciate the offer. I am slowly working through what has changed. I was just hoping to get a jump on what was conventional wisdom when I was active and what has changed. I think everything is coming together.Originally Posted by juano

Nvidia cards don't typically require any dedicated CPU resources to themselves, so that theoretical system would be best run at SMP 8 and two 460s. Nvidia GPUs still use a little bit of CPU resources to fold so there is a decrease in CPU PPD running NV GPUs versus running no GPUs at all, but it's usually small enough that it's not worth dedicating an entire thread to them, even for multiple NV GPUs.
Any other questions we can answer for you so you don't have to dig through old info? (This isn't meant to sound condescending, I honestly want to help you with any folding questions you have)
Hello. This is all your fault. If you wouldn't have been such a help all those years ago I wouldn't be in this mess again.
zodac also quit and left us all in the lurch. Just saying you know in case you'd like more things to blame her about. Not that I blame her or anything.Originally Posted by dave12
