Sound card vs. Onbard Rampage Formula sound?

Hi,

I'm thinking of getting this sound card (but I have a high budget and can get better if I want):

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132020&cm_re=asus_xonar-_-29-132-020-_-Product

I use onboard motherboard sound at the moment...here is the feature advertised for my rampage formula motherboard on board sound:

"SupremeFX X-Fi 2 Built in
Featuring hardware-accelerated EAX 5.0 and OpenAL, SupremeFX X-Fi 2 delivers ultra-real cinematic gaming audio experiences to ROG die hards. It even comes with THX branding, which makes games, music and movies sound way better! SupremeFX X-Fi 2 also implements gold-plated jacks and high quality capacitors to ensure high definition adventures in audio. "

Do you guys think the sound card mentioned (or another card if you can suggest it) would be better than the onboard sound I am currently using?

Thanks,

Pretty much anything is better than onboard about 75% of the time. If you have a high budget, and you listen to music and movies with headphones, I would get the Xonar STX.

Thanks,

The Xonar DG supports Dolby and I'm sure will provide better headphone sound then the on board.
The Xonar DG will emulate EAX 5.0
Some places sell the Xonar DG with free shipping and no sales tax.

It depends on what headphones speakers you have. If you don't have super expensive ones, then onboard and a dedicated sound card will sound the same.
Thanks guys, I decided to buy an ASUS Xonar DX from my local memory express store. I can always return it if I want later if it doesn't perform to my expectations...although that headphone amp on that Xonar DG looks attractive too since I game/play music with headphones alot...

Btw cuad, I use 200$ Bose headphones (noise cancelling too) and 110$ Razer Carcharias headphones (yes I have multiple headphones I am insane lol)
