I don't know if there is much difference in temperature tolerance... in fact, I've noticed the southbridge is the hotter chip on my mobo, maybe because of its location and smaller HS... it's hard to explain, but put shortly there is NO airflow around that thing.

Your chipset was fine, they can comfortably handle up to 65 degrees before giving any problems. Now, especially with the addition of even a passive heatsink, the chipset will be nice and cool. No AS5 is required. I also suggest pushing the voltage back up to 1.6. Lowering it to reduce temperatures will probably hurt your performance instead of aiding it.
