Project Rose - A Car-puter by axipher

Android/AMD APU Entertainment System in a 2007 Honda Accord SE

Introduction

Welcome to my latest project, Project Rose. This is something that I've often thought about doing but could never justify buying a new system just for my car. Thankfully, with a few build logs under my belt, I've managed to get some sponsorship started for w truly unique build.

It all started with some talks with Rob over at AMD whom I met at the OCN Grand Champion Series in Toronto, ON over Canada Day weekend. He managed to get me in touch with the right people and got my build kicked off with a big bang with a AMD A8-3870k. I've never played with an APU myself other then a couple lower end ones in builds for friends so I'm really looking forward to doing a nice review of the chip and seeing how well it performs in a car-based entertainment system.

This project has slowly grown in to something much bigger than originally planned and has acted as a base for me to test new DIY, work with new materials, and push me to learn new theory and techniques.

I'm currently looking in to securing some more sponsorship so I can truly make this build the best it can be by focusing my own funds on the car itself in preparation for the new system.

I'm going to spend as much time as I can on this thread making it the best it can be as well so please feel free to give me any constructive critcism that you have in regards to the thread or the build itself. It's my first car-puter build, but not my first time working with car audio systems so I'm not worried at all.

Project Overview

  • Full entertainment system
  • Install a GPS program Use Android GPS program, either Maps or Co-Pilot
  • Allow for input from an external audio and video source
  • Custom mounting bracket for 7" Nexus 7
  • Custom case built inside my glovebox with some clever duct work I have planned to get rid of the heat
  • Completely re-wire the entire speaker system
  • Design a custom box for all the audio equipment in the trunk within the spare-tire area
  • Upgrade the car's electrical system
  • Possible LED TV or projector in the trunk as well
  • Fully sleeve the build
  • Run EL-Wire and LED's as accents
  • Update front bumper with fog lights
  • Integrate light controls in to Car-Puter

Stella, completely stock aside from the stereo system

Finally some pictures of the interior before doing anything

Factory deck on top, Alpine CDA-105L on the bottom to be replaced

1000

Close-up of existing deck and possible future location of LCD screen

1000

The brains of Project Rose's home, needs a little cleaning, custom vents, and a mounting system

1000

The amp and sub's home

Rubber trunk mat with raised edges soaking in a soap solution

Alpine Type-R 10" Deep SWR-1022D (Dual 2 ohm)

Alpine MRP-M500 350 W RMS @ 4ohm + 500 uF cap + Hydraulic Jack + 10A Battery Charger with Jump Start feature

Full-size spare winter tire (that puny donut tire in the spare tire well is retired to make room for the amp)

Front Tweeter location:

Sub and spare-tire only in the trunk (normally I have a bunch of tools and auto supplies)

Just the spare tire and a mysterious extension cord (but where's the amp and how is the sub connected)

Spare-tire well re-organized temporarily until I build a insert out of plywood to mount everything to

Just another shot of the spare tire well

Sub connection (super easy removal was a key feature)

That's what the extension cord was for

Hides nicely behind the sub box

Normally it's actually hidden, but just showing where it runs

Stella just strutting her stuff

Where the wiring comes from

Nice and secure ground lug

Little behind the scenes cable-management

All cleaned up for the car show on Sunday

All cleaned up and waxed for the car show

On display at the car-show

Trunk emptied out aside form the sub

3rd place trophy for loudest sound system in the amateur trunk division

Somewhat organized spare-tire well

Passenger side cables

Removind the head unit, shifter cover plate first, then ash tray, then mounting bracket

Really messy internals

Cleaned up a little for the new amp

Configuring the new amp

Project Rose and my buddies Sunfire

Speaker + Laptop setup

Using Mixxx for DJ-ing

Work in progress sound system

Im planning on doing something similar to my eclipse. I use a program to tune it that requires a laptop and my radio is outdated and wont play .flac or .wav files so I decided it would be a little cheaper to build a small atom machine or similar and throw it in there along with a 7" lillyput touch screen. Good luck to you and I look forward to seeing some progress.
