I think the short answer is no, but I'll leave the full explanation up to somebody who knows how to explain it better than I can. I mean, it's best to have multiple defenses rather than just relying upon only one thing. So, I say get
Avast. It's a better anti-virus application than AVG, and it has a smaller system footprint. I've also heard Avast referred to as the best free anti-virus program available.
If you're willing to pay, then shop around for the best price on ESET's NOD32 Antivirus 3.0. It's been called the best pay-for-it anti-virus program available. It also has an extremely small system footprint.
You can also add other applications like Ad-Aware, and Spyware Doctor. The reason for having multiple defenses up is that while one may not catch/recognize something bad, the other will. Not only that, but it's best to pair up an anti-virus program with something such as Ad-Aware, Spyware Doctor, or Spybot if you prefer. Or have all four running. Or have two different AV's going along with these other defenses.
