SSD Defragging?

I have an Asus EEE PC with a SSD 16GB HD. Do I need to defrag it?

Defraging an ssd will not improve its performance but wears out the drive so DONT

dont defrag an SSD

I believe it wears down the drive, and since ssd's are so fast anyways, fragmented files wont be an issue unless there is an extremely high number of fragments

you can check the fragmentation level.
Defragging reduces the performance and life of an SSD. Never do it. Instead, use the TRIM command as needed if the drive supports it.
You do (depending on the type of ssd), have to run the TRIM command or use wiper.exe periodicaly to to keep it defragmented/healthy.

read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRIM_(SSD_command)
As others have stated, NEVER defrag an SSD. The SSD can only be written to so many times, and all of the small reads and writes of defragging added up over time will degrade the lifespan of the drive.

With the super fast access times of SSD's, defragging is completely unnecessary.

I am about to do it to the new kingston drive, but I am a little hesitated now. So would consolidating free space cause any damage to the ssd?
Defragging an SSD is bad for two reasons:
1) It hurts the drive by using unnecessary writes
2) SSDs can access any location of the drive on demand, it isn't limited to rotational speeds like mechanical drives (this is what makes location important on HDD).

I have tried what you linked to. And it didn't help my drives at all

The main goal with SSDs is to do what you can to minimize writes to the drive. But if you only have the 1 drive, then nevermind. In that situation, I would just relax since this is still a new and immature technology.

But yes, defragging an SSD is a very bad idea. It's also pointless.

Interesting. I guess I'll just wait for the official trim release from kingston. Hopefully it will not take too long

Wear levelling kinda fragments the data all over the drive to make sure all memory banks get used more or less the same amount of time throughout the life of the drive, and this doesn't affect performance at all.
I doubt these old "asus" SSDs feature trim or will ever do, your best bet would be to wipe the whole drive when you start seeing performance degradation, find a way to do a sanitary erase if possible (wipe all blocks and mark them as wiped) then reimage the drive.

Just run it as admin!
Does it work with all ssd or only to specific brands?

Just try it and see if it works. If it works, then you'll see it do something in a little window. If it doesn't work, then it won't do anything.

Access time is almost non existent on SSDs, the only advantage of defragmenting is when you actually have a physical head that has to move from one part of the disk to another just to access an entire file, which is only the case for traditional mechanical hard drives. File consistency etc won't improve performance or at least not significantly enough to justify wearing out the SSD.

Flash memory wears out after many read/write cycles. Defragging will just make it wear out quicker. It wouldn't improve performance anyway.
Wiper.exe is only for the idilinx SSD but it does not hurt to try. I would also try the tony trim method its for all SSD.
