I have an HP DV6810us. Its okay. 15.6", athlon II tl-20, 4gb of DDR2.

I beat the crap outta this thing. Not intentionally, but I do.

I'm afraid my HDD is going to fail.

So far I have about $150 in this laptop. It needs a new battery ($100) if I was to keep it.

Is it worth it to buy an SSD? A 60GB and under cheapo? Or should I go all out and get a sweet 120GB~250GB SDD? ($350 max)

The computer is currently only used for school coursework, which is mostly MS office, and internet browsing. Maybe a little photo editing, but I only have MS Paint, lol.

This is not a which SDD drive do I need question. It's a "is it for my situation" kind of question.

many many of those are refurbished batteries. Thats what I have now. After about a month, they begin to show wear. I only buy new batteries. And from a local shop. The battery price is not my concern, but thank you for trying.
