Steam backup system inefficient and broken

Why is it downloading ANYTHING when my games are up to date and the time between me making the backup and then restoring it was about an hour. There is no way that I should be downloading gigabytes of data.

Morons can't make an archiving program.

You're restoring both the whole steamapps dir, not just the GCFs, right?

Correct if wrong, but Steam's backup utility(the problem), doesn't let you specify.

Oh, well that's been known not to work for ages, and it can't be fixed properly because new games are constantly coming out.

Just copy /steamapps/ instead of backing up games. Or copy both the GCFs and the game dir from either /[id]/ or /common/

I used the steam backup utility and I am running the installer that is created with it. However as an update, I am able to make it work by specifying a few programs at a time, it seems to just freak out when you trying to install a ton of games at once, it could also be the non standard valve games that are having issues as well, UT3, Splinter cell, KOTOR to name a few on my list.
It is the non-Valve games that have always been known to screw up with the tool. As I say, just pick the dir and GCFs out from /steamapps/, that will work.

So you are saying I could use something like 7zip to compress my steamapps folder, and then extract it into my new steam directory and it would pick up on it without throwing a fit?

Yes, that's the way people are always saying to do it in the forums due to the bugginess.

Because Steam uses an internal registry for all of its games, and regenerates it every time it detects new GCFs, it is fine to simply backup /steamapps/ and restore it.

Awesome, I'll do that next time I need to blow away the hard drive instead of this crappy backup program. I just popped my new i7 into my system and it took 45 minutes for it to backup my meager 50GB steam list, seems an awful long time for so much processing power.

That's because it is trying to compress (iirc with gzip) everything too, so it will take longer than a straight copy.

Yea, I've seen people recommend the built in backup, but I prefer just archiving/duplicating my SteamApps folder.

Apparently. It takes forever
It's quicker to just copy the folder and transfer the larger amount of data, rather than spend time compressing it, transferring, and expanding the archive.

Yeah, much quicker. Steam is generally quite inefficient, I wish they'd tweak it up a bit.
I think they're in a position where they can't afford to risk messing something up, if they were to renovate. What they have now either works good enough or something else does, and changing anything could easily open a can of worms.
Lot of misinformation in this thread. Steam's backup utility has no problems when I use it. I used it for Borderlands, CSS, Fallout 3, L4D1 and L4D2 when I reformatted by PC to upgrade to Win 7 Pro. It's an efficient program that gets the job done. Also, I didn't find it slow, and I have a mechnical HDD. It only took about a minute and a half for Borderlands.
Depending on the game, it could be downloading your savedata from the steam cloud.

I copy my GCFs, generally over a LAN connection.
I've actually had the Steam backup utility render my PC unusable when I had four 320GB drives in RAID-0. The machine was completely stable (Q9550 @ 4.2, 4GB DDR2-1000), and I basically couldn't do anything. I waited about an hour and hard reset my machine and just backed up the folder. I was only backing up one game as well, Counter-Strike: Source. It was pretty much a base install plus a custom HUD and maps used in competition (de_season, etc).

Ever since then, I decided that it wasn't worth the effort.

I hate to inform you that just because you've not had a problem with it, doesn't mean that nobody has, and it doesn't mean that it is the best solution.

So, you make a statement that Steam backup has been known not to work for ages. However, it works for me. Therefore, yes, because I have not had a problem with it, your statement is rendered false and is considered misinformation.

You're spreading misinformation that the backup utility doesn't work. It does for me, and other people, therefore it works. If it didn't work for you, fine, but it is a functional utility.
