steam games stutter

A friend of mine just got a new HD, fresh OS install, and all his steam games are now stuttering. He is using on board realtek sound and noticed if he uninstalls the realtek drivers it stops. All other games work fine. He is using xp32. Anyone every have this issue and now of a fix? Btw this is on an MSI X58 Platinum board.

Well if I play some games I stutter (TF2 for example) then I realize my GPU is getting too hot and I up the fan speed in EVGA Precision, it usually stops it.

Did he install the newest drivers for his video card?
