I'm really knew to audio side of computers so bare with me
i found these speakers kicking around in my basement there properly hitting 12 years old now.

this is what they list information wise speaker: 4", impedance 8ohms, max power handling capacity 3w

so is it possible to hook these up to a computer system and what exactly would i need.
i have been looking around myself and from what i have gathered i would require an amp, but there rather expensive and I'm not even sure these speakers even work.
so would say using my surround sound system for my tv be an equal substitute to an amp? like i said i could be going about these all wrong so all help is appreciated greatly.

just run your output on your sound card to the rca jacks input on any amp (even and old one) use the phono input if there is one as they have low signals. Make sure your volume on the computer is off. set the amp to 2:00 and then slowly raise your computer volume until you get the desired level. you can then balance them to where you want and for what you want to control the main volume. the wattage of the speakers are very low so you will blow them easily.

3 watts? I wouldn't waste my time with them to be honest. Won't sound very good at all. Will sound like a cheap "ghetto blaster" type system.

When I was a kid I wired 8 car speakers(put them in the drop cieling) to my handheld GE cassette deck and it kept me for years till I could buy a stereo.

Not everyone has daddy's credit card (nor had a daddy).

You'll need a 1/8 phono to RCA to go to your amplifier for the RCA in on what channel you prefer. After that follow Hueristic's instructions.
3 Watts? Are you sure its not 30?

Was going to offer to sell you a amp, but it would blow those speakers in a few seconds lol. I those speakers are really 3w then you good buy a headphone amp to push them for cheap. They run off of AA batteries.

i was thinking of just hooking them up to my surround sound system and running my computer off of there, but since you guys raised a good point with them only being 3w lol

When I was ten, I once asked my dad if I could borrow 10 cents to go with my 90 cents so I could by a chocolate bar, and he said, make your own dang money. I am 23 years old and have never been handed a thing. I was never even tought how to drive by my parents.

I'm running some stereo speakers from 1992 on my PC atm. Like heathmcabee said, I'm using a 1/8" to RCA cable to my amp which is connected to the speakers. Speakers are rated at 35W and the Subs at 45W.
If your speakers only use 3W, is it possible to just plug the 1/8" jack into the line-out of your soundcard without using an amp?

I have the same. Old speakers were like that I guess

My amp is from the same setup, so it also has the raw wire input. You could probably just strip a RCA or 1/8" cable on one end and connect the raw ends to the speakers.

ok, the speakers may not be junk, and you can hook up the surround sound amp to them. You want more power than the speakers really need, so the amp does not struggle to give them power. 3w is a very low rating, but you never know how a speaker enclosure sound untill you hook them up. From the pic they look pretty cheap, but if you are dealing with some cheap plastic enclosed speakers right now these should sound way better. the first thing you will need to do is find out which of the 2 wires comming out of the box is the + wire. You will need a 9v smoke detector battery, and a flashlight to find this out. tap the bare wires of the speaker enclosure to the + and - of the 9v battery on and off, while shining the flashlight at the speaker so you can see thru the grill cloth. the speaker will move, when the front of the speaker moves toward you the + terminal on the battery is connected to the + wire of the speaker. if you hook one speaker up backwards from the other you will have little to no bass. if you hook both up backwards it will sound eary (SP?). Then you need to connect the speakers to the outputs of whatever amp you are using.

ok moving on with this thread, i got the speakers working, there not the greatest things in the world but eh, so after some thinking how about using car speakers like these and just making enclosures for them myself
unable to go to link, but you will need to make sure the resistance of the car speakers matches the amp ohm stability. Most home audio uses 8ohm speakers, while most car audio speakers are 4ohm, I have in the past series 2 sets of car audio separate's to equal 8 ohms "you will find info on series and parallel wiring at "the12volt.com" . My guess is that you may need more power than your current amp can produce. Budget systems for music on a computer not "5.1" would include shopping the local thrift stores "goodwill and st vincent depall etc..." for old Pioneer or Kenwood 1970's ish solid state stereo amps. My current computer audio system is a 1975 pioneer solid state sx737 purchased at a goodwill for $25.00 3yrs ago, and some MTX Thunderpro2 monitor speakers available at stores for about $150.00ea. while the speakers are on the upper budget side, the amp has ran tons of different speakers as long as I load it at 8ohms. the old 70ish solid state amps have bookloads of power, and seem to last forever. Note this is 2ch stereo, which in my opinion is the best way to listen to music unless you are using dvd audio discs ect... I have a great front stage, and I mostly listen to live cuts of music. If you are looking for 5.1 and want a major upgrade be ready to shell out the big bucks, or stick with a basic all in 1 system. The secret to 5.1 and up is you need to have the same speakers in all 5 channels to get the goods, in other words you are better off with a basic all in 1 system that has the same size speakers all the way around, with exception of the sub, than you are with large towers in the front and smaller speakers for the remaining 3+.
