Sub-2.5" SATA HDDs

1714 Views 20 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  bobfig
Any know where I can find a sub-2.5" SATA HDD for less than $90? I believe the next "common" form factor is 1.8". I am aiming for 80GB+. Some MP3 players use them. Which ones so I can maybe buy a defective one and pull the drive.

Very few MP3 players in the 80+ range use SSD's (mostly 1.8" HDDs)

Most of the 1.8" drive ones use 16 & 32GB drives.

If you can do a 32GB 1.8" SSD then look for deffective units like the:
Zune HD
iPod Touch
Cowon S9
Archos

Are they SATA? I'm searching eBay and see most have Zero Insertion Force connector... is there a SATA plug underneath?

Ebay link, $125. *Note this uses the micro-SATA connector* Though this cable should work.

Very tricky to find, I had to use this Toshiba model number: "MK8016GSG".

What will this be used for? I have used 1.8" HDD's in the past, and the performance is just horrid, but knowing you you already know that, and this is for a low power/small space computer.

Hm...

I believe they're referred to as SATA ZIF... Strange name considered the connector doesn't resemble SATA in the least.

Actually, I'd be surprised if any PMP had a drive like trueg linked... The drive shown above better suits the task.

It's just for a movie storage. As long as it can do 20MB/s read and 12MB/s write, I'm fine.

The Patriot Box Office has room for an optional 2.5" drive. I heard the fan is slightly audible. I was thinking about installing a smaller drive and it will free up space to mod a 40mm/50mm fan instead. If it the mod is going to cost more than $50 or so, it won't be worth it.

SATA protocol... ZIF connector.

Was my inital thought, just seems like it has a different amount of pins than your standard power+data sata cables... Not that a tiny pic like that is any good for making comparisons, though.

FWIW, the drive in my ipod can only manage a pitiful 16MB/s maximum read. It dips down under 10 towards the end of the platter. Write speeds are in the neighborhood of 8-12MB/s. Watch what you buy.

I just replaced one of these on a Dell Latitude D430 120gb drive. Has that ziff connector and it costs like $120 at CDW.... any of those just wouldn't be worth the money. I think they are 4200rpm as well.... didn't really pay attention to that part.....

It looks like it's ATA ZIF and not SATA ZIF?

From Hardware Secrets review:

One nice thing is that installing the hard disk drive is optional. If you don’t want to add one, you can play back media through a connected USB storage device or from the Internet via the built-in 10/100 LAN connection. You can also hook the Box Office up wirelessly, but to do so, you have to purchase any optional Patriot USB 802.11g Wi-Fi adapter.
So couldn't you use a 2.5" HDD in a 2.5" enclosure and keep that on top or behind that media box?

In the Legit reviews review of it they had a similar encounter, but it proved to be a pre-production model glitch:

The biggest downside to the Patriot we had, however, was its loud fan. Now, I say loud, because in my home theater environment it was the loudest piece of equipment I had. Even from 12 feet away where we sit to watch TV, I could hear the Box Office turn on and off. The effect was even more pronounced when we moved the box to a bedroom. We told Patriot about the loud fan and they informed us that we must have a defective fan as it is rated at just 20 dBA. Our sound meter was showing 52 dBA from about a foot away from the unit, so something obviously wasn't right. Patriot expedited a new unit to us and when we turned it on, it was like night and day. The sound from the new box was much quieter than the pre-production unit that we originally recieved.
.

Seeing as how Hardware Secrets had a similar pre-production unit, it could also have the same problem.

I would like to keep the drive internal... so the baby doesn't break it.

I get my unit tomorrow so I can check for sure.... I was really looking to mod something.
I might just add some thermal pads and mesh vents instead....

No idea, but there are ZIF to SATA adapters.

The only 1.8" hard drives I've ever seen come with either a ZIF connector or a CF connector.

The only 1.8" drive with a regular SATA connector that I've ever seen is the Intel SSD.

D00d, you have a baby and you *still* have time to mod things? What the heck do you have to do for your gf/wife on Valentine's Day / Anniversaries, to get that kind of freedom?
