Were you able to unlock the fourth core of your Ph. II X3?

% Success v. Failure rate of the 4th core in a Phenom II X3

"View poll results" should get you the results.

I would like to have a very rough estimate (and I'm sure a few others do too) of the success rate of unlocking the fourth core on the AMD Phenom II X3 Processors by asking fellow OCN members who had already had attempted to unlock the fourth core whether successfully or unsuccessfully.

In addition to a Y / N answer it would be nice if you could also post other details that may affect the CPU such a motherboard, non-stock cooling system, etc.

I'd like to know since the Ph. II X3 is next on my list and I'd like to see my odds of getting lucky.

You have to have a specific mobo for the core unlock to work, it's kind of a bios glitch. Unless you plan on buying a new mobo along with your shiny new 720, you might be disappointed.

p.s. you have a better computer than most people in the world right now, no reason to be ashamed

Well I'm getting a new setup all together since this is a pre-built HP PC with a 4850 and a 550 watt PSU and the products they use are extremely low end and very cheap.

So whether or not the fourth core unlocks or not depends on the motherboard completely and not just the chip itself? If I recall correctly I remember a thread where someone had originally gotten a 710 that worked then proceeded to a 720 BE that failed which led me to believe that the fourth core working or not was something that made me think that the fourth core on the CPU was actually faulty rather than something that would be completely controlled by the motherboard.

Edit: The actual question in the poll might have been a bit misleading but the answers made up for it I guess.

Don't get me wrong, the motherboard isn't the only variable. Getting lucky with the chip plays the biggest part, getting the right mobo is easy. There is a good chance that your 720's 4th core will not be 100% stable, but as demand increases the chance of you getting a perfect 4th core increases...

If you are going to build a whole new rig from scratch go i7!!! Nothing can touch it in terms of performance right now and it really isn't that much more expensive despite what people may claim.

Ah cool, well that's what this thread is for, to find out more

Also I'm on a tight budget so this is my rig that I've been looking at, and i7 seems out of range for me with that DDR3 and initial pricing; great CPU and all but AMD + ATI has really helped the budget here for me.

I presume you've seen/read this thread?

I'd say your chance of success is pretty good. Demand for X3 processors have dramatically increased. That can only mean the percentage of perfect X4s that are "X3-ified" will begin to rise. You may even unlock your 4th core and get it nicely OCed with stability.

If you're going to use the stock cooler then definitely consider aftermarket cooling down the road, especially if the unlock goes exceptionally well. Good luck!
Add a "i wanna see the results", so the ones that dont have a x3 can see the results

"View poll results"?

I believe I made it public too.

bah. i cant get mine to unlock at all. im thinking its just my mobo. but when i look in my ACC options it has 4 cores listed, but if i enable ACC in any shape or form my system wont post at all. Still very pleased with 3.5ghz with the stock cooler (waitin for a watercooling kit to come in) and the 7.5mb cache. This chip so far has made a mockery of my old 9950 BE which i sold for enough money to get my 720 lol
Mine unlocked fine, and its 100% stable at 3.5Ghz

Your mobo is going to hold you back. AFAIK you need an SB750 south bridge and enable ACC to "Auto" or "all cores". My Biostar TA790GX A2+ works fine and my 4th core is completely stable. Good Luck!
