My dad wants his iphone 3gs to get a more reliable connection in the garage. what sort of repeater do you suggest?

I was thinking one of the smaller ones that simply plug into an outlet, either in the kitchen or in the garage. I have heard that some will repeat the signal sent from the router, but not the packets that the iphone will return back to the router thus they are useless, and I would like to aviod that.

Laptops will connect without dropping usually so there is wifi signal in there, it's just not solid enough for a very reliable connection on a 3gs.

Whoever you were talking to doesn't sound wholly experienced with IT, to be blunt.

A basic repeater would work, ideally you would want to place it 1/2 to 3/4 of the distance to the garage so the repeater doesn't have quality issues if slight interference were to be introduced (microwave, etc).

A repeater as such would cut your available wifi bandwidth in half, but for iPhone usage this should not be a paramount consideration.

Certainly would be fine for the iphone or laptop in the garage as a stronger signal at half the bandwidth would still be an improvement. However would other wifi devices such as my PS3 in the living room, or my Galaxy S II, be affected as well even when I am near the wifi router?

Networking was never much of my thing :/
