looking for a laptop to play some games while away from home (95-99% of its use will be on saturdays during work since there's nothing to do)

budget: around $500-600 USD (tax and shipping included)

some of the games i'll play: diablo 3, cs:go, h1z1 for now

graphics settings: low or medium

max res: 1920x1080 or close to it

screen size: the smaller, the better. for now, i will say definitely no to 17 inch screens or larger

weight: the lighter the better

for reference, i used to use a late 2013 macbook pro for awhile. at 3.46 pounds, it wasn't heavy at first. but overtime, it started to get annoying to carry around

nice to have but not mandatory: touchscreen, illuminated keyboard, max res. above 1080p (such as 4k)

UPDATE 1: changed my criteria

UPDATE 2: i can just play less demanding games to accommodate a lower budget. so i took off gta4/5 and skyrim
keep in mind that this laptop is only for 10 hours each saturday so i think i can survive without an $800+ laptop

Only problem with going smaller than a 15" is that they won't have dedicated GPU's so you will be stuck with an iGPU. Sure it might work for some games at basic settings but it will run the computer very hot.

There are only two or three devices on the market like that.
The new Microsoft Surfacebook is 13" and the 2500$+ version
got also a dedicated 940m. Thats like a GTX 660m or like any
GTX670 / 7950 series, which is mindblowing for an 13" device.

Next would be a clevo W110ER.. also 13 inch and with a 650m,
which is very close to the 940m of the Surfacebook. It should cost
still around 1500$.

With that budged i´d aim for some 15" device, since you will get NO
good GPU for that what you have to spend.

Please correct me someone if i am wrong.

Your wrong.

940m is not a GAMING solution. Can it handle some titles, sure. Its more a help for huge excel spreadsheets and anything generally with hardware acceleration for smooth transitions. Comparing it to a GTX 670 and/or 7950 is a huge stretch.

W110ER is 11.6

W230SS/ST is 13"

GS40 also has a 970m and potentially the 6820hk 14"

GE40-2OC is full i7 and 760m 14"

Newer GE40 has the 850m Here with the i7 as well. 900 USD and GDDR5 to boot

Dude, he wants to play some games away from home
and no GAMING solution.

And lol sorry i was writing about an 970m in another forum so u
switched numbers, sou you are right.

Some 940M / 650M is comparable to an GTX460 and my 970M
is between an GTX670 - GTX680.

Didn´t know about the others. They are ALOT cheaper than here in Europe

...

GTX 460 is about 90% better than the 650m. A heavily overclocked 755m may come close.

Your also forgetting the crippling factor the 940m anyways which is a 64 - bit memory interface versus 128. An unlocked 650m will leave the 940m behind.

The 970m can easily outpace the GTX 680.

The 850m GDDR5 in the GE40 will likely be the best option available to him so he can play games away from home

More less, but the difference is not that big when it comes to under 30fps,
It was so laughable that the 650m and 750m perform the same ^_^

And again thank you my Friend, i was talking about my oced 650m,

LMAO @ playing GTA5 on a 940m

I agree with TheReciever, the 940m is nothing to want if you want to play some games nicely. I'd be looking for a 960m at the minimum personally. I wouldn't be wanting to go further behind a 900 series gpu at all these days. What if a new game comes out in a year or so and it's Dx12 and it will run twice as fast as a GPU that is only capable of running Dx11, I'd be pretty upset on my purchase then. Don't you want your laptop to last you at least 3 years or more? I do..

Stick with a 960m or above and try to find what you are looking for. I also agree that you should consider some 15" models. You will get a much better laptop for the budget you are looking at. Going smaller usually means double the price for the same specs.

The 755m. Not the 750m.

Same core, significantly faster memory.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Alienware-15-R2-1080P-INTEL-i7-6700HQ-NVIDIA-GTX-970M-1TB-8GB-W10-Gaming-Laptop-/201497170210?hash=item2eea2ad122:g:9WsAAOSwNSxVPs~p
The Alienware 15 R2 was the 2nd laptop I tried buying out of the 4 I bought in the attempt to get my new laptop lol. I did like the Alienware 15 R2 a good bit. The audio was very nice, way nicer than the Asus G752 without a doubt. The color adjustment for the whole thing was pretty sweet. I did like that style of keyboard, was nice to type on, but the only thing I didn't like was that the keyboard was to centered and when trying to game using WSAD, those keys were to far in the center and made it very weird to game. Pretty much had the laptop off to the left side of me so my wrist wasn't broken after gaming for a while lol. I did have a MAJOR issue with that laptop tho and was the reason I had to return it. It has 2 slots for NVMe ssd's and the one I got came with 16gb of Ram and came with a 256gig Samsung NVMe SSD (PM951) and came with a 1tb mechanical storage drive. The NVMe ssd was a lot slower compared to buying a Samsung 950 Pro. The write speeds were only around 300mb/s which is even slower than a normal Sata3 ssd (500-530mb/s) .. Read speeds were only hitting around 900mb/s too?? But the MAJOR reason I took it back was the fact that I would turn it on and all of a sudden the 2nd / Storage drive was gone from Windows. It didn't show up anywhere. Reboot and it was still gone. No matter what I did, I couldn't get it to show back up. Even taking off the back panel and unplugging it and plugging it back in didn't help any either. I would then lose all my games, and even more important I would lose my folders that had all my work files / prints in them and I couldn't do my job at work at that time. Looked online and MANY others had the same issues with the drives just not showing up or being gone. Then out of nowhere, it would show back up and my games and files would be back and things were ok again. Kept using it and then the drive would disappear again. It happened like 4 times to me in 2 weeks. I had to return the laptop because I couldn't have my files gone when I needed them for work. Or when I went over a friends place to game for a while and hangout, my games being gone wasn't cool either. It bummed me out because I did like that laptop. One thing I wasn't that thrilled about tho was how hot it ran. The cpu would be knocking on 90c during gaming and the gpu hitting around 85c. That was pretty warm IMHO, but it wasn't showing signs of thermal throttling so I guess it was ok, just didn't like it much. I like lowest temps possible lol.

It's worth a try tho. If you get a good one and have no issues with it, then you should like that one quite a bit. I would have, if it didn't give me the problems it did. Now on a MSI GT72 and I'm happy as can be. It's got the same type of cool lighting accents and customization. It runs way cooler and quieter, and the keyboard is laid out much better for me to game using the WSAD keys. Also having the number pad on the right side is almost a must for me at work. i can run numbers a LOT faster with that. The Alienware was pretty cool looking tho and was cool to show off
