honestly, ddr2 vs ddr3 won't even give you more than 5% boost. stick with ddr2 unless you plan to upgrade your 720be in a short time, then go all out with am3.

mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128378
ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231180

you have a 720BE laying around?

The ddr3 is a good option and there are some benches around to show that it works well in most all situations.

for am2+ setup, ill get the stepp down of that board (ud4p) and the ddr2 g.skill 1100's. then again, prices seems to be about the same, what bothers me is the damn latency of ddr3's, so darn high... sigh..headaches.. and yea ddr3 wont show more than a 5% boost..

People were worried about the timings on DDR2 at first. Once the tech matured, it pulled ahead of DDR1. In my opinion, DDR3 is not mature yet, so I'd still go with DDR2 unless you just want the bragging rights. DDR3 will get better, but it isn't there yet.

I'd get a cheap AM2+ board for right now, and then when the new chipsets for AM3 come out, get one of those.

And yes, DDR3 is still maturing, and given the latencies relative to the speed, its actually quite good, and it should continue to get better.

Good luck

this one step up for me..will last atleast a year..so...thats why im having such headache..and theres no predicted date as of when the newer chipsets will com eout..darn it all..thanks all. +rep.
Lots of good DDR2 RAM cheep both new and in the For Sale section and a good OCer won't cost that much.
So you could either drop a C note and run AM2+ for a rather good system on the cheap or sell off your CPU and move on to AM3, a new (removed) MB and somewhat expensive DDR3... your choice.

EDIT: You already have the AM3 Ph II, no CPU needed for the upgrade, so I removed that reference, whoops!
i've decided on this board http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128387

and this ram ( unless someone can point me to a nice set of good oc'ers that'll do 1100)

any inputs are welcome ofcourse.
for that price id get a gx or fx. I suggest my board. its awesome and allows for unlocking the 4th core. That ram is a ripoff imo, get something from the for sale section for less than half the price.

what batch is ur cpu. if its 0904 make sure u get a board that can unlock the 4th core because chances are good that urs will unlock

mines 0904, and gigabyte just released an update bios taht'll unlock the 4th core for 790x boards. and the reason im not getting the GX i sbecause 1- i dont want the IGP. and i think this one is great at its price range, as far as the ram go, like i said, i cant seem to find anyone on the sale section selling a nice 2x 2gb kit...

i think ur making a mistake. IGP is really useful in case u need to RMA ur GPU. Also, either way i wouldnt get that ram, high end ram is a gimick and doesnt increase performance. Quantity not quality is my belief when thinking of ram

I recommend the DFI 790GX-M2RS (not junior) board, or the 790FXB-M2RSH if you really want to spend money. For ram, any 1066 5-5-5-15 or 4-4-4-12 800 kit will do, but I like Mushkin. Why DFI? IMO and through my constant use of DFI boards, they are my favourites and good/great overclockers.

oh ya, and if u really dont want IGp. get an FX. FX is much better than X.

i surely understand and know how "high" of "quality" DFI boards are, as you can see from my current rig (DFI) but i just wanted to try something new this time. and i have no needs for FX or GX. thats why im jsut staying with 790X. i picked that ram because g.skill bins their rams very very carefully..aka, you get what you paid for. im investing a lil more on quality ram just so i can let my oc breathe a lil more ofcourse. but if you guys can point me to a nice 2x 2gb kit - that for sure can oc or will do pretty good timings, that'll be great. my best times were back in 939, am2 and beyond im outdated. luckily the OC'ing scene stayed the same tho =D.

The difference is that the FX supports full 16x crossfire, while the X supports 8x (its essentially a 790GX without an IGP).

Most DDR1066 ram is just overclocked DDR800, and really, you would probably be better off with some DDR1066 with decent timings, just because its pretty cheap, and you'll likely get the same OC out of them. And usually the difference in ram is less than 5%, so its not a huge difference anyway.

Good luck

man i highly suggest go for the DDR2 platform and wait for the AMD8 chips with DDR3 and SATA3 coz its the most promising performance platform for AM3..the 790GX on am2+ platform using DDR2 is found to be more responsive than the DDR3 platform..

any source to back this up? but either case, i think i've set my mind on ddr2, just need to get a good set..either new or from here in the sales section, but doesnt seem like ppl are selling a decent pair of 1066's atm -.-!
