Surprisingly hot card (Idle) 91 C

I have an Ati Sapphire HD4670 1024mb. Its default clocks are at 750 / 873. I clocked it 770 / 923 which isnt a lot. I left the fan on auto and when I browse the internet the fan spins up spins down. (Depending if im scrolling a a page and etc.) I'm not doing anything big like videos and stuff. I open my temps and it's at 90-94! So I into CCC and put fan to 100% the temp dropped down to 48C.. So then I put the fan back to auto, continued surfing, and it stayed there.. Any ideas why it does this? It can do it up to twice or even 3 times a day. I'm getting worried.

Not sure about the problem with auto in CCC, but I don't trust CC in general. I and many others here use MSI Afterburner. It's free and works with all manufacturers. You can set any fan profile you wish with an easy graph.

The funny thing is that i've never had problems with CCC in my 4 years with ATi cards... BUt I use GPU-z to check temps and ratios. Also, my PCIe Freq is at 105... But that too, is low too cause problems isnt it? I played The Last Remnant for about 8 hours yesterday not counting breaks (leaving it on) with it doing fine the whole time. And that is a pretty graphic intensive game.

EDIT: Hey dopey, hello from Rawdon Quebec ^^

Did you try lowering the PCIe freq just to rule it out as the problem? Also, what's your fan speed on auto at idle? If it's set too low the card will be hot at idle, but auto should ramp the speed up... It makes sense that it's fine when you game, as I'm sure the fan is running faster under load as it should.

If I were you I'd try Afterburner..

Hey salut ! ^_^

Im prolly gonna leave it at 100% Fan speed. It idles at 40C now. BUt i'll definately check out that software. And for the Freq, I can't drop it unless I drop my FSB too.

EDIT: Can I use that to OC my GC instead of CCC? Or I absolutely need an MSI card?

There should be an option to lock the PCI freq. What BIOS do you have?

Are you talking about the Bios or Afterburner? PCI-e Frequency is in the bios.

Yes im talking bout the BIOS, I had the option to set it so that they are not synced, the fsb and the PCI clockspeed that is.
My board doesn't have that, its the one in my seg... Its got OC capabilities, but they're not great. And my FSB / PCI-e Freq are synced.
That doesn't sound right at all, I have a 4670 in my HTPC and it runs 31'C Idle and the fan ramps up and it loads at around 58'C. Something wrong with your fan profiles or your card is on its way out I would guess.

I doubt it's the freq anyway, just wanted to be sure. Yes you can use Afterburner for everything, core and memory clocks, voltage, fans, etc. Everything. And with any brand card, and ATI/nVidia doesn't matter, it works.

Yea I tried de-clocking it but I get the same temps. I'll try putting some new compound on it.

Ha... I cleande my heatsink and put on some new compound. 32 Idle, 62 Load.
Now that it's fixed I'll try afterburner. Thanks! Rep+
