What you mean is that you have a cable modem with one slot, and that is running to your computer. You WILL have to buy a ROUTER, not a switch, a switch will not work as it is a layer 2 device and is just a pass through, a router will forward DHCP which is what gives you your computer's IP address.

No, Buy a ROUTER, and connect it to your MODEM, with cat4, 5 or 6 cable. Then buy as many lengths of cable to connect each computer to the router and run the network setup wizard. RJ-45 is the ethernet cable you will need for this project. And yes, both will be able to connect at the same time, and to each other.

True, to my knowledge, you cannot buy a single rj-45 connector router it would be useless, what she is describing is a cable modem.
