Switched from 438x8 to 500x7: The RAM loves it!

In the interest of getting a bit more out of my Mushkin RAM, I decided to change my CPU multi from 8x to 7x ... and the difference is quite noticeable.

Previously, I think the RAM clock was around 890mhz or so ... but with the 7x multiplier, running my 6400 at 3.5ghz, it's a solid 1000mhz.

Not only did it shave a second or so off of my 1meg SuperPi time ... but it is totally noticeable in certain daily functions such as windows loading and gaming.

(or maybe it's all in my head)

...

...

...

(PS ... I tried running the stock timings for my RAM (4.4.3.10) at this same setting and had to clear CMOS on my P5B-lux!)

For daily stable use ... it's pretty good ...

This 6400 is rather nice. I've had it up to 4.3ghz benchable and on air cooling.

I was just surprised at how noticeable the RAM overclock was.

Much snappier all around ...

Had to reboot for benching setup ...

That's the best score I could get ...

i think SuperPI is all about CPU speed and isn't affected much by memory speed and timings. i think PCMark05 would be a better judge of all-around performance.
Bumped my CPU up to 521x7 (3.65ghz) ... doing some orthos at the moment:

(overclocking in the summer is such a drag!)

on the contrary, it is very dependent on memory timings..the tighter the better. Speed affects the times as well..but timings have a larger affect..unless you are talking about a 250mhz jump in speed..that can overcome some looser timings.

ie- 800mhz @ 4-4-3-8-4 was faster for me than,
920mhz @ 4-5-5-16-5

Dont take my word...try it yourself. You'll find the results surprising.

I've noticed similar results ...
