Switching from ATI - Building a QUIET System

Switching from Dual 5870s to dual.... something?

I have $600 to spend and it'd be nice if it would run on my 850w PSU, I'm willing to go single card (like a 480 or something) as dual cards aren't SUPER important to me... It just seems like 2x 460s seem the best.

What would you suggest I get?

After you suggest I get... Which BRAND? I was leaning towards 2x MSI Cyclone 1gb 460s.

It doesn't need to be absolutely dead silent but it definitely needs to be on the quiet side of things.

get an MSI twinfrozr edition fermi. i've had a twinfrozr card and they are super quiet even at 100% fan.
my vote is the GTX 460. Not sure how they are in noise, but I'm assuming that it should be quiet.
Cyclone GTX460s are some of the quietest, coolest graphics cards I've ever used. Two of them would be a fine combo. I've had next to no issues with SLI, whereas x-fire always presented me with many niggling issues.

Pretty much the reason I'm switching
Overclocking sucks, bad.
Settings don't save.
Drivers suck.
Fans conflict with MSI Afterburner even though they aren't supposed to.
Crossfire issues.
Force AA / AF / Vsync DOESN'T work more often then it does.

Why not just watercool your 5870s?

Because drivers... I'm also switching from a full tower to an MATX case, where "Strong and silent" is more important than "Big and bulky"

Liquid cooling just wouldn't fit

Also the money for this switch would be funded by selling the 5870s, Its either 2 5870s which are loud, somewhat hot, and have problems vs what seems to be some pretty godly 460s.

Sure, I'm losing performance but the peace of mind of not having to mess with 900 settings when I start up for the day, the better force AA/AF, and the better SLI Scaling is a lot more important to me.

Two 460's is cooler than other Fermi's, OC's amazing, and, since it's cooler, should be quieter lol

My vote goes to Twin Frozer IIs or Cyclones.
My 5970 is quiet and I have no driver issues but to each his own.
Lol get what i have... a 480 with a AC Accellero Xtereme Plus... they are so quiet and also run really cold... plenty of OCing headroom

I WOULD but I believe dual 460s offer better performance.

Now... If I suddenly had a 1000w+ PSU and an extra $400 I'd totally go out and buy two of them

2x 460 OCed vs 480 OCed.... 460 wins... but not by that much... plus you have to start from scratch again if u want more speed... because 2x460 = max lol

^This.

I would go for a GTX480 with either a waterblock for ur WC Loop or an Accelero Xtreme

5850 are also silent
if u want to stick to nvidia strictly, then 460 sli
but ur 2x5870 outperforms that
also,if not watercooling, get accelero extreme,
and i'd wait for 6 series before i make any decisions
at least wud make things cheaper
im not a fan of the 2x 460 bandwagon because you have no upgrade path =\\

um you said mATX, so which mobo are you using? 'cause the one you have in sig is certainly not matx

watercool and figure out ur driver issue. you can't have a silent system without either watercooling or passive cooling. It just requires too much to cool components with stock coolers. Also, if you do want a truly silent setup you are going to need a HUGE box like a mountain mods ascension with a pedestal underneath because you will need massive amounts of radiators cooled by sub 600 rpm fans. It's taken me a total of 12 x 120 radiator to get my rig relatively silent with acceptable cooling

What are thoughts on 2x TwinFrozr 470s? Someone suggested them on another forum and they seem pretty... tempting.

Would they run on 850w? Reviews seem to say so but I dunno..

I'm only avoiding 480s (even though its like.. $50 more) because I don't think they'd run on 850w and I KNOW they'd be loud.

Decided to go with Silverstone FT02, Keep my mobo.

Just selling 5870s (I still need to sell one!) and my WC loop.
