The Phenom II X4 955 exists, and it's a pretty nice overclocker. At least, that's the impression you might get after reading a thread at the XtremeSystems Forums, in which a member has posted CPU-Z screenshots of the unannounced AMD processor running overclocked in the Windows 7 beta.

As you might remember, we last wrote about this purported Phenom II X4 955 two weeks ago. Back then, word was that the 3.2GHz quad-core CPU would hit stores in April, and that it would be a Socket AM3 part with a 125W thermal envelope and support for DDR3-1333 memory. That chip was also said to be a replacement for a 3.1GHz Phenom II X4 950, which AMD supposedly canceled because of better-than-expected yields.

Dumo from the XtremeSystems Forums shows the 955 engineering sample running at the stock 3.2GHz speed with a 1.25V voltage setting. At 1.45V with air cooling, the poster claims he was able to hit a cool 4GHz by pushing the HyperTransport speed from 200 to 250MHzâ€"and he even has a screenshot to prove it. That screenshot shows Dumo also overclocked his memory to 1666MHz, which netted over 11GB/s of read bandwidth according to a Lavalys Everest benchmark.

Extremely impressive numbers. Looks like AMD was kidding about the chips having a nice life span (although a year or two i do i not see still.) I hope they can continue to refine 45nm and push these things out on an FX platform, 4GHZ stock maybe? (Better include a Xigmatec cooler or something with 'em.)
Hm... nice. Now is that speed stable? If so not bad at all AMD, not bad at all.
nice im curious to see at 4ghz what intel chips this will compete with.
Sweet will be getting one

i'm mostly interested in the crossfire scaling. if it's significantly better than 775 i'll be on amd for my next platform.

Stock is 3.2GHZ. 4GHZ is just an easy overclock.

cool. now give us some 4.0ghz stock ph2 that can be oced easily to 5ghz with 8mb L3, that costs $300

This looks beastly.

That's good news to hear from AMD. This seems to mean that their 45nm process is doing quite well, a big difference from their 65nm. The 65nm didn't seem to scale too much, but this 45nm seems to be scaling to higher clocks and is doing so in a pretty short amount of time, considering it's only been like 4-5 months since its introduction.
According to the forum, that ES hit 3.6 on stock volts....pretty damn good if you ask me. My 720 BE needs 1.475 to hit that. We still don't know how stable the 4ghz overclock is though, as well as how easy it was to get to 4gz. I remember the 940BE ES going to 3.9 here, but when it was benched on various sites, they couldn't match that frequency, and neither can several other members, judging for the 940BE overclock thread. I really hope this chip lives up to its current promise (keeps fingers crossed

BTW it's 3.6Ghz at the new low stock voltage 1.25V.

First batch of PhII had voltages set at 1.35.
I guess i'l be getting one of these, April can't come soon enough. I'm just worried about the price.
Even more good news for a future build-to-be.
I thought I would keep this 940 for over a year, but if they release the 3.5GHz stock that was mentioned for under $250, I might have to grab that on the cheap
but screw DDR3 for a while.

That's a good result for AMD considering this Phenom architecture is again underwhelming. Hopefully this is still cheaper than the i7 920.
