Tech Station Ideas?

2861 Views 49 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Voltage_Drop
Okay so I finally decided to build my tech station and I have so many ideas. Im seeking input from you fellow modders as this is my first tech station that I have ever built and Im unsure which direction I should go with this. Im thinking Plexiglass, Fans, LED's, HD Bay from parts case, USB, Power, Reset, everything. So what brilliant ideas do you have?

PM syrillian, A.K.A the tech station god. He will have good suggestions, no doubt.

I agree with the Syrillian thing.

And nice work! +

However, I have a few suggestions:

I would have acrylic side panels for the sides, but leave the front open.
I would drill holes for standoffs, (7/64" holes should do) and make a PCI rail to support the graphics cards.
I would maybe also make support for hard drives and optical drives in the lower compartment too.
For the power buttons, you can get a nice vandal proof button that can be mounted using a holesaw and some screws.
For the USB ports, I'm not so sure... I think you'd have to take them from an existing case.

@meticapa-Thanks, I was thinking the same thing about the plexi on the sides with some LED fans mounted on the plexi. The standoffs I was going to use a bricked ATX board as a template. I wasnt sure though if I should put the mobo on top or bottom, that was part of my indecision. Not sure what buttons Im going to use as of yet. And the USB and Audio I was going to salvage from an unused case.

@IEATFISH-I like that, Nice clean look to and it has everything that I need.

Definitely put the motherboard on top - true Tech Station style.

@meticadpa-yeah, your probably right. I would have better access to it as well. The only reason I entertained the bottom was to maybe showcase it through the plexi sides with some lighting. Though I suppose functionality supercedes looks!

If I were to put it on top I was thinking I might put a tilting base for the mobo, cut and modded from another case, and of course I would have to build a support for the expansion cards.

Will post more pix as it evolves.
Okay I added the top brace and tommorow I am going to run to the hardware store to finish it off, then I can drill the standoffs for the mobo
. So what do you guys think?

Remember the drill and tap the holes for the PCI cards.

It looks good though. Are you going to paint it? Or just going to leave it as is?

It'd look good either way.

Tommorow Im going to pick up a metal bracket to mount on my brace. Im not sure if Im going to paint it yet or not, thats been a toss up. Once I finish the bracket, Im going to bring the heigth down on the brace. Thanks for the comp!
If I may make a suggestion...

You could use Plasti-Dip instead of paint. It tends to stick better in applications like this, and leaves a sort of rubbery finish.

Also, are you going to be cutting holes for cable management?

Once I mount the mobo I am going to holesaw a spot for the cables to come through. I have never used Plasti-Dip but I will check it out and put it out there, sounds unique.

Also Im going to try to find some plexiglass and lighting

thanks for all of your input.

Greetings, Voltage.

You asked me about "ideas", so I am assuming you mean the design aspect.

As already stated, the motherboard is most readily accessible from the top tier of the station.

Here are some images that might give you some things to consider:

^This one had a fan mounted on the side panel to cool the HDD's

A partially enclosed tech station that was built for dual loops:

This one was made for a Dice-user:

^You can see that in most situations that the HDD's simply sit on padded rails. Since I have no inquisitive fingers or nosy people that live with me, it is quite safe.

^ Make sure you have adequate space not only to place components, but also that you can get yer mitts in there as well.

Another aspect to note is the placement of the PSU and how the main power wiring will be routed. If the station is too tall, then the 24-pin and the 4/6/8-pin power connectors may not reach, so measure carefully and account for neat wire-management (if you find that to be of importance).

Good luck, and happy modding.

@Syrillian-Wow, man I dont know what to say, those rigs are sick! The other posters were right, you are the person to ask about tech stations/modding. I wish I would have read the bit about cable length, Im going to have to do some mods to my station, but thats the fun part. Ill get the hang of it. Thanks for all the advice.

So anyways here is the update to my tech station:

I have mounted my mobo and got her up and running to test it out. With no add on fans it runs a few celsius cooler all around. I cant wait to mount some fans
. I just threw the components together to see her run. I still need to mount the expansion card bracket and work on the bottom half of the station. Definitely going with some windows.

Okay now I have mounted the expansion cards, drilled some holes for wire management, and built a stand for PSU, which helps me to route the wiring. Here are the pix:

Nicely done, Voltage. Nicely done indeed.

So, you gonna paint your tech station or leave it bare.... maybe varnish? A sealer of some type will ensure a greater longevity.

Thanks Syrillian, I hoped you would like it. First I think Im going to sand it down and smooth out the edges and then go from there. if I decided to paint it, what would be good paint to get?

I've also got a few questions about grounding and fan placement. Should I ground the motherboard to the power supply or is the ground from the connectors adequate? And where do you think would be critical areas to place some fans?

Thanks in advance.
