I have just installed Ubuntu linux and I haven't a clue where to start. I can't find any sound drivers and I can't for the life of me figure out how to install the ATI driver. I know you need to use a command line or something but how the hell am I know what that isn mean to me lol

Please help, I want to learn how to use Ubuntu competently so as i can move on to other versions but atm I am staring from fresh and haven't a clue. We all have to start somewhere

Get a comfy chair and dive into , http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty
If you still cant find the ati support check here , https://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/deskt.../hardware.html

To install the ATI driver:

First on a terminal.
if its saved on the Desktop, then type:

sudo ./Desktop/ATI_driver_name_here

(Enter password you login with when prompted)

if its saved in the home folder, type:

sudo ./ATI_driver_name_here

to avoid typing the whole driver name, just type some of it and press TAB.

I'm still looking for Creative Audigy drivers so if anyone else knows please give me a bell.. I am getting no sound at all.

Also I tryed to play a DVD and it automaticaly installed some codecs but it's all multi coloured and wierd.

Try installing some other codecs under Add/Remove look for gstreamer they have most of the codecs and also install the Restricted extras. Use the search box and All availble applications.

And as for no sound maybe your Onboard and Sound Card are conflicting with each other.

I keep getting this pop up all the time and it's annoying:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

when i do use that command i get this:

dpkg: requested operation requires superuser privilege
bump, i really need help here, i can't use any command lines without this popping up

for your ati driver, use...http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

i know the site says nvidia, but trust me, it has the ati one as well

to get ride of that error, type "sudo" before the command. then it will prompt you for the root password

The ati driver is working fine, thanks. Thankyou stanrc, that worked. Plus rep for everyone! This is easy when you know how.
Ok, now I have got everything working i am wanting to install Beryl. On the instructions it says:
Step 1 : Edit your sources.list file adding

deb http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org feisty main

Now I the closest file i found using search was this:

sources.list.save - which is read only... where is the file i add this line too? I try and open the other ones and it comes up with a console.
There still seems to be a problem with the codecs, I have installed all of the GStreamer codecs but the image is still appearing like this (even on VLC):

Do you have the win32 codecs installed and libdvdread and libdvdcss installed? If not then that should fix it.
On the Ubuntu forums it tells me to do this to install the win32 codecs:

1) $gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

and then add this to the end:

## Medibuntu - Ubuntu 7.04 "feisty fawn"
## Please report any bug on https://launchpad.net/products/medibuntu/+bugs
deb http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/ feisty free non-free
deb-src http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/ feisty free non-free

but the file is read only and won't save... thus stopping me from taking the next steps

At first it all seems overly complicated but once you've got the nack of how it all works it's pretty straight-forward

I believe that site is or will become obsolete... It's here now: http://medibuntu.org/ You can go to the repository how to to add the sources...

I am currently working out how to get Desktop effects to work with the close-source ati driver, the open one which supports it doesn't work on my card lol. I keep getting this error message:

"The composite extension is not available."

Yes.. I kept having problems as it couldn't find the file lol. I solved that in the end although i forgot how lol.

About the Desktop effects thing... I found out I have to use something called XGL to make it work, (as the close-source can't work with the composite extension apparently), what is that? I really want to get this working so if anyone has got it working on their X1900 cards let me know how
