AMD's fastest quad-core processor yet may be out in just over a month. According to a report by Hardware-Infos, the firm plans to roll out the 3.2GHz Phenom II X4 955 on April 20.

We've heard a lot about this CPU lately. Two weeks ago, HKEPC broke the news that a 3.2GHz Phenom II would be out some time in April. Then, yesterday, we noticed that a member of the XtremeSystems forums had nabbed a sample and overclocked it to 4GHz.

Hardware-Infos echoes the same information as those other two sources: the Phenom II X4 955 will have a higher clock speed and support for DDR3 RAM, but it will otherwise be similar to the X4 940. That means 512KB of L2 cache per core, 6MB of L3 shared cache, and a 125W power envelope.

Considering how the X4 940 performs compared to the Core 2 Quad Q9400, the 955 could end up fighting it out with the Core 2 Quad Q9550 at a similar price point.

The 940 is already under 200 bucks.

yummmm
So the 955 is 3.2...

I wonder how high they plan on going with the numbers? I'd hate to see the stock clocks on a 995.
This makes me want to switch AMD knowing that there pretty much tied with the Quad line of processors but they still don't have crap on extremes and i7's.

The only reason to get an i7 is if you want to waste your money or are doing some professional work and need your cpu to be slightly faster.

qft

(don't get me wrong, I'd love to have an i7, but only if it cost exactly the same as my sig rig
)

The reason I went for i7 is as a treat to myself, and because I wanted the option of SLI and Xfire. I still haven't decided on my next GPU(s).
If that had not been the case, I would have jumped on one of the Phenom IIs. They were my second choice to the i7 as it was, I do miss the good old days of my AMD 64 3500.

The day AMD motherboards sport both SLI/Crossfire and match performance to Intel's CPU thats the day I will switch to AMD.

the only advantage i see for i7 over the q series is the x58 chipset which, i gotta hand it to them, is a pretty good reason. the scaling (specially on nvidia cards) looked pretty amazing.

/off topic

but the 955 may be my new processor, who knows. the 8450 has been running really nice but, hey i bought this as a temporary until i get my job (next week i'm starting
)

So, this is not a Black Edition and has a locked multi?

More than likely it will be a black edition. I think from the 945's on they all will be black editions.

Not likely it's usually the highest clocked chips that are BE's.
