Temp Question

really how much of a difference does watercooling make on temps?

Hell of a lot, I am going water cooling this summer!
i mean theres not like a certain numbner like 10 deg
Depends on your setup.

A pre-built 150$ kit will get you high end air cooling temps.
A $400+ custom build will get you much better temps...
Saw my load (prime95) drop from 71c on air to 50c on water

If you do the job properly you may get about a 30% improvement over a stock air cooler set up. Actual figures may vary. The poster accepts no liability for fried cpus and broken bank accounts etc etc

There is no set amount for the reduction of temps like you seem to be thinking. But, if you could, imagine you just got a Q6600 G0 @ 2.4Ghz stock.

You throw your new Mobo, Ram, CPU, and all those other together in your case, and hook up your WC loop. On first boot, you install your OS, and monitor your idle and 100% load temps. They don't seem to be rising much past idle... 5-10C at the max. You go to your BIOS, set your 2.4Ghz CPU to a whoppin 3.6Ghz, and up the vCore to 1.35, leaving everything else on auto, save, and exit.

Your PC continues to boot, you get in your OS, double check your volts and temps. And then start doing some CPU stress testing. No? Really?

When you go to watercooling, temp is not really an issue anymore, it's the quality of your CPU =)
Huge difference. I used to use air-cooling and could not get my e4300, no matter how hard I tried, over 3.0GHz. Even at 3.0GHz, I still saw temperatures of around 40C idle and nearly 75C load. With watercooling, I was able to throw my processor up to 3.4GHz, and my idle temperature is 28C idle and 69-70C on full load.

It's quite substantial...but it also depends on your processor (mine is old so it gives out a lot of heat), the air cooler you use now, and the watercooling stuff you will get if you choose to upgrade.
I can usually hold a hot OC'ed dual core to 10-15C above room ambient Primed loaded up for a hour or two. Thats with a pretty decent custom loop.

My Q9550 @ 4.2GHz runs pretty hot with the cooler I had before, so I figured I would just put the money that I would use towards a high-end air setup and put it towards a good custom water-cooling setup.

Just imagine, having a Q9550 @ 4.2GHz loading in Prime95 Small FFTs at only 50-60c, that's unreal.

The real addiction then becomes aiming for those low "delta T's" they call it.

They say delta T from ambient to load of 5c is "high performance" and even lower than that is just unreal (something you would expect from a high high end setup).

I think your thinking of the rad coolant out to ambient delta. You want to keep that at 5C and under for good OC'ing.
