Terrible FPS in Minecraft with my 6970 :( Help?

1004 Views 16 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  NeoReaper
Back when I used my GTX 560 Ti for Minecraft with all settings maxed, (including quality settings that OptiFine provides in it's Ultra version) I'd get no less than 60FPS. Without the AA and AF options, I'd get ~150FPS. With my 6970, it's about 14FPS. In fact, I can't play vanilla Minecraft without random spike lags (~20FPS). I tried playing on "Fast" and lower rendering distances but I honestly don't want to. I'd like to get equal if not better performance than my 560 in MC. In BF3, I can play maxed out with Motion Blur on the 6970 @1680x1050 but Minecraft is making me want to switch back to the 560 just for MC. Is it AMD's Drivers or Minecraft itself? On the MC Wikia, people report high frame rates but I'm not seeing it. Really disappointed right now. Hopefully someone can help me resolve this? If it really is just the drivers, I guess I'll be switching back to my 560 as MC is my main game anyway. Thanks in advance to all who can help.

Hello,
I would see what drivers those people are using as mincraft is not really looked at by these company's when they create drivers, also make sure there are no power saver settings on xD , and make sure the card is at it correct clocks ! .

I used to have these problems too, I can tell you that it's definitely minecraft (assuming other games work just fine).

Try installing the 54-bit java client and optifine.

Yeah, correct clocks (verfied by GPU-Z while in-game). No power saving settings. :I

Yeah, it's set to launch the 64-bit version (new launcher's definitely a nice improvement). OptiFine's already installed.

I have the same problem with my GTX 670. I used to have a 7950 (was sorta DOA, but still playable in some games) and I was getting in and around 300FPS, now I can barely run 200, thats if im lucky. Its minecraft itself, works with some cards, not with others.

Yeah I noticed :I. My 560 Ti seems to perform better than my 6970 but I just found something. Maybe you or someone else can help me? When I'm in-game, GPU-Z says that my 6970's Core Clock is at 500MHz and sometimes will drop to 250MHz. Is this some kind of power saving feature on the card? And if yes, can I disable it? Maybe that's why it's performing so poorly?

Yes I believe there is a function in the AMD dashboard or something like MSI Afterburner to force the card to run at a certain frequency all the time. No absolutely sure where.
You're card is going into 2D mode because Minecraft is doing what it does with mine every now and then. Minecraft is not triggering 3D mode on the GPU, if it was a AMD Design 6970 OR it is not overclocked use GPU Tweak and Force it into 3D mode.

I can't seem to find an option for that?

Use "Advanced Mode" in GPU Tweak and you will see a little 3D button, press it and your card's fan will spin up because it is now in 3D mode.

Well, my FPS is acceptable now. Thanks

+rep Fluctuates between 50-100FPS. Definitely a step down from my 560 Ti's performance in Minecraft but oh well. I'll be upgrading to a 700 series card in the near future anyway. Seems that NVIDIA performs better in Minecraft.

I have noticed this with my 6870, was not the performance I was expecting even with an SSD. I think the cards work better by other people's "tests" that Intel CPU's and AMD cards are faster in Minecraft...

I even tried Optifine's multi-core rendering but all that did was add more load on my CPU and generate a few more chunks than normal. My CPU and GPU hardly hit 50% usage and my SSD's usage in Task manager is like 45% when running Minecraft so I do not understand why Java is being soo slow. (Plus I dedicated 4gb RAM to Minecraft)
