I had some time off today so I decided to play with my 226w TEC that I got long time ago but haven't had a chance to use it. I dont want to run to the stores to get all the stuffs for condensation protection, plus I planned to cool the hot side with one of my Air cooled HS. So I thought it'll be a good idea to undervolt the TEC & I decided to run it on the 5V instead of the 12V on my PSU.Took my son's rig and rip it apart for the test, here's my setup:<br />
<br />
Mobo: Abit SG-80<br />
Ram : 2Gb PC3200 3-3-3-8<br />
CPU: P4 506 2.66Ghz clock to 3.2Ghz (160x20)<br />
Vcore: 1.34 idle - 1.31 Loaded<br />
PSU: 2 separate crappy PSU, 1 for the rig 1 for the TEC<br />
Air HS: dont know what it is, took it from a sony VAIO<br />
<br />
Temps w/o TEC: 35 idle - 59 Load<br />
Temps with TEC on (only 5V): 19 idle - 50 load<br />
Temps with TEC off: 55 idle - unknow load (scared to try)<br />
<br />
<br />
will update some more pics later on. After all I'm happy with the result, just wonder if it'll have the same result with my 920.<br><a href="http://assets.overclock.net.s3.amazonaws.com/3/39/393cbfa7_vbattach32573.png"><img src="http://www.overclock.net/image/id/617558/width/525/height/525/flags/LL"></a><br><a href="http://assets.overclock.net.s3.amazonaws.com/a/af/af897d57_vbattach32574.png"><img src="http://www.overclock.net/image/id/617557/width/525/height/525/flags/LL"></a>

Pretty snazzy. How do you protect your pc from condensation?<br />
<br />
I might want to get into this =)

The kind of condensation youll see depends on the operating conditions, which can vary greatly and is based on many factors. It generally depends on the temperature and humidity of the operating environment. Case-in-point, its kinda random. Intresting results none-the-less.

well I didnt insulate very good, just put some dieletric grease in the socket and a piece of neoprene around it.I'll go to my dad and grab his old 500w PSU tomorrow and try it with the TEC. I think it'll give me better temp.

It is good to see you actually try this. Few here have been thinking about it but never got around to doing it as most are installed in water blocks and in use. I am unsure if the 226 watter module could cope with the heat load of your rig even with alternate cooling such as water.<br />
<br />
Have you got a picture of your set-up please<img src="/images/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Smile" class="inlineimg" />

update with more pics, had to resize them <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/tongue.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Stick out tounge caps"><br><br>
The thing is I dont want to deal with the condensation. All I want is to keep my load temp around 40 - 50 C and I'll be happy. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/thumb.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Thumb"><br><a href="http://assets.overclock.net.s3.amazonaws.com/a/a9/a959875d_vbattach32585.jpeg"><img alt="LL" src="http://cdn.overclock.net/a/a9/525x525px-LL-a959875d_vbattach32585.jpeg" style="width:525px;height:394px;"></a><br><a href="http://assets.overclock.net.s3.amazonaws.com/6/62/627a8c3d_vbattach32586.jpeg"><img alt="LL" src="http://cdn.overclock.net/6/62/525x525px-LL-627a8c3d_vbattach32586.jpeg" style="width:525px;height:394px;"></a><br><a href="http://assets.overclock.net.s3.amazonaws.com/4/4f/4f8bb5b9_vbattach32587.jpeg"><img alt="LL" src="http://cdn.overclock.net/4/4f/525x525px-LL-4f8bb5b9_vbattach32587.jpeg" style="width:525px;height:394px;"></a><br><a href="http://assets.overclock.net.s3.amazonaws.com/5/52/52311f7a_vbattach32588.jpeg"><img alt="LL" src="http://cdn.overclock.net/5/52/525x525px-LL-52311f7a_vbattach32588.jpeg" style="width:525px;height:394px;"></a>

thanks <img src="/images/smilies/wink.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Wink" class="inlineimg" /> <br />
<br />
been running nonstop for the last few days. No problem yet. I'm going to try this setup on my D 920 this weekend. Below are pic of Prime 95 pass over 38 hours. Been idle for bout 18 hours & havn't see any condensation yet. If my D 920 will work out like this .. i'm a happy camper. <img src="/images/smilies/wink.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Wink" class="inlineimg" /> Plan to cool the hot side of the TEC with the BT this time, wait for my result.<br />
<br />
Note: My room temp is about 27.5 C<br><a href="http://assets.overclock.net.s3.amazonaws.com/8/8d/8d53db0e_vbattach32734.jpeg"><img src="http://www.overclock.net/image/id/617437/width/525/height/525/flags/LL"></a><br><a href="http://assets.overclock.net.s3.amazonaws.com/5/52/52b5d435_vbattach32735.jpeg"><img src="http://www.overclock.net/image/id/617436/width/525/height/525/flags/LL"></a>

Those are nifty idle temps...but I can get better load temps with a BT and a Silverstone. Is it really worth the power consumption for that? See if you can get the pelt cooler. Try and keep the load temps under 40°C. If you can do that, then the ends justify the means.<br />
<br />
EDIT: It's still a cool project, don't get me wrong!

you're right, after all the BT alone might have the same if not better performance. But like I said in the first post, I just wanna play around with the TEC cuz I have so many unused part laying around plus I dont have to worry about the light bill (it's free) so I'm not worry about how much power consumption it's gonna take. <img src="/images/smilies/wink.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Wink" class="inlineimg" /> Everything still have to wait untill I put it on my P5WD2-E Premeium cuz right now the limit to my OC is the temp. I'm @ 4.48ghz & load temp is like 69 C on the BT+Silverstone 121FM, both CPU & HSF lapped.

What heatsink and fan is that? Those aren't bad temps for only 5v. Believe me, your power bill wouldn't go up running that, it's probably only drawing like 35 watts... How hot does the heatsink get? After running with the peltier on, load the CPU up for a while and fell the heatsink. If it's not warm, you should try upping the voltage to the peltier a bit. If it is warm, you need a stronger fan or better heatsink. <br />
<br />
If you have two spare PSU's that you're not using you should try building Engineer's "more complicated" PSU. If you're lucky enough to have two PSU's with adjustable rails, you'd have decent voltage controll from about 6.5 to 12 volts. Perfect for experimenting on that air-cooled TEC.

I'm not sure what kind of HS I got since I took it from a Vaio rig. It looks kinda like the SilverStone SST-NT01-V2 but it has 5 heat pipes & using the 120mm fan instead. The temp on the TEC hot side when it's on is still very cool.I can touch the base as long as I want. I think it would be perfect to run it at 7 volts. I'm gonna try to built the PSU that you suggested. Thank you for your idea.

Same setup, but this time is 6 volts for the TEC. Idle drop 1 C, load drop 3 C. Will try 7 volts when I have time to get all my tools. TEC still very cool.<br><a href="http://assets.overclock.net.s3.amazonaws.com/7/7d/7d91b2a0_vbattach32794.jpeg"><img src="http://www.overclock.net/image/id/617389/width/525/height/525/flags/LL"></a><br><a href="http://assets.overclock.net.s3.amazonaws.com/5/54/5419b33f_vbattach32795.jpeg"><img src="http://www.overclock.net/image/id/617388/width/525/height/525/flags/LL"></a>

Then just get a BigTyphoon and get one with it...lol. Theydon't use massive amounts of power....

nice, I have been thinking about using a TEC with my water cooling rig, but I think I would have to setup two different loops cause my one loops is doing my cpu and my graphics. and I think the tec would put to much heat into the loop.

</div>The BT couldn't keep my 920 cool enough @ 4.48 and I know I can go a little further if I have better cooling.WC is not my option right now that's why I decided to play with the TEC.

I've been watching these threads and have ordered some TECs and stuff. I'll be going the air cooled route and I think I have figured a way to run the TECs on 12v and keep them powered up.<br />
<br />
Coolers im using:<br />
CPU: Thermaltake Blue Orb II on top of a 95watt TEC<br />
GPU: Zalman zf900cu on top of another 95watt TEC<br />
<br />
My main goal is a system that is more portable than most of these monstous rigs with water cooling and 5 PSUs. Im also using all ATX power <img src="/images/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Smile" class="inlineimg" />

let's see if the BT can beat this idle temp <img src="/images/smilies/tongue.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Stick Out Tongue" class="inlineimg" /> <br />

updated with new pics of the psu i've just completed.
