Everyone's favorite underdog, AMD, had better look to its laurels next year as Intel goes for the jugular with a bunch of cut-down, low cost desktop chips.

Low-power 'S' versions of the 32nm quad core i5-750 and i7-860 will run at 2.4GHz and 2.53GHz respectively, using 82W of power. They'll both feature 8MB of L2 cache. According to the roadmap, the i5 will increase to 3.2GHz and the i7 chips to 3.46GHz.

Core i3 will arrive in both 2.93GHz and 3.06GHz versions with 3MB of L2 cache.

I think he meant "8 Megs of L3 cache". In fact, I'm pretty sure you can substitute L3 for L2 everywhere in the article otherwise Intel's whole Nehalem Arch. goes right out the damn window (256 KB L2 per core, GINORMOUS 8 MB L3 shared cache).

Exactly.

And since when is 82w low power for a CPU?
AMD has 75w quads out (for quite a while based on 65nm tech).

The i3 processors will take it hard to AMD, these s series probably won't fall below 200.

75W ACP, not TDP

The Phenom II X4 e editions are 65W?
As the rest said, this is worthless without prices.

But to be honest, unless these new cpu's are under £100, it wont matter anyway.....

exactly. frankly, i'll wait and see, but i can't help but think that AMD has the market cornered here... considering you can get anything from an Athlon II X2 at 2.8ghz to a Athlon II X4 at 2.6 in close on $40 apart from each other, and considering also, the X3 710 and X2 550 are there as well, and the latter has a potentially unlocked core...

Intel has an uphill battle here.

Intel's production costs are way lower than AMD's, if they wanted to they could significantly drop the prices of all their processors, they only choose to leave their prices at their current level because of relative performance to AMD chips.
Aren't i3 supposed to be the new dualies?
yup. some i5's will be dual cores aswell, only with hyper threading.
Until Intel has a chipset who's capabilities are equal or better to the 785G AMD wins the low end.
By the time these are out the lowend AMD quads will be $70-$80, compared to these new dual core i3s.
oh yeah prices

So yeah. Intels lowest spec dual core is the same price as amd's highest spec athlon II quad. I think AMD can keep this market.

After seeing some prices. AMD is fine. The processors will still win in price/performance, Chipsets are still superior, and not to mention, overall lower platform cost.
this should be interesting. Personally i hope AMD will be able to hang on to the low end market.

Hahahaha, are you comparing a Phenom with a i5 or a PhIi with an i7 in performance?

Hes talking about the power envelope or "TDP."

Besides i would assume that a Athlon II X4 would be faster than a low end dual core ix cpu. Ofcourse, even if it wasn't, the 5 generation gap between Intel and AMD IGPs takes the guess work out anyways.
