Whats the best card for this resolution? Im thinking a 7900GT would be over kill to run at 1240x1024. Im talking about running all the current games at that resolution at Highest settings.

Basicly my friend was talking about getting a 7900GTX. But hes only ever going to run it at 1240x1024 max resolution. I said a 7600GT would do that.

Im just thinking because my 7600GS seems to.

What games specifically. A 7600GT will run most games on medium\\high at those resolutions. Tell him to wait and get an 8800GT DX10 compatibility n all.

1280/1024*
Its a decent resolution, and if he really wants a 7900GTX you shouldn't discourage him. 1280/1024 with high amounts of AA and AF makes it look great.

If he really wants a 7900GTX, recommend the 7900 GTO. $250 and can OC to GTX levels pretty darn easily.

dude.. he doesnt need a 7900.. not even a 7800.. if he just wants to run at 1280x1024 w/ high settings, get like a 7600 or 7300.. i run 1600x1200 at HIGHEST settings, and ULTRA quality on all my gmes w/ my card.. so there's no need to get a 7900

I would get the 7900GTO for all of the eye candy....and at $250 it is pretty hard to beat. If money is an issue, then the 7600GT is a better choice. Just my thoughts.

Crack you must not own a lot of demanding games because I can think of quite a few that would not give even close to playable framerate on your system at those settings. As in F.E.A.R., Oblivion, Chronicles of Riddick, Black & White 2, and Comdemned Criminal Origins. So depending on what games he plays he might want to look into a 7900GTX, 7950GT, or 7900GTO if he wants max settings at 1280x1024.

I could full out FEAR on my 7600GS without a hitch. Even on one x1600PRO GDDR3 I could.

Soft shadows? Yeah.

My 7600GT can't maintain 30+FPS @ all high, including SS, @ 1024x768. Doesn't go lower than 25 though.

Neither an 7600GS or x1600pro can max out F.E.A.R. at 1280x1024 with what I consider to be playable framerate in a first person shooter which is a constant 30+. I know that those cards can run the game at max settings it just isn't any fun to play it when you get 17 frames per second.
