Hey all! This is my first post here, although I've been reading this forum for a while before I became a member.

I'm putting together a new desktop rig based around the Core i7-920. It's main purposes will be for home theater, video encoding, and hopefully a good share of games.

Compared to a lot of you here, I probably fall into the novice category. I believe I have a respectable amount of knowledge on the subject, however.

If you would take a look at my setup please and give me any suggestions or opinions on how it's looking. It's not put together yet and the parts can still be returned if I made a dumb mistake such as a compatibility issue.

Thanks for your input and once again, Hello!

Welcome to overclock.net

If you can increase budget by a little...I suggest getting a slightly higher end GPU like a GTX260 or even a GTX275. I'm not sure what GPUs are similar on the ATI side but feel free to check what they have to offer as well.

Another thing I'm looking at is the PSU since I'm not that familiar with Rosewill PSUs. You should check the Power Supply Recommendation thread to see what PSUs are decent. You can also check eXtreme Power Supply Calculator to see how much wattage you may need (add another 100-200watts for headroom
). Just know that you also have to put into consideration AMPS and quality on the PSU when you buy one.

I'm not familiar with the case but it looks good from the looks of it (good price for a full tower). I checked YouTube for a video review on it and it looks decent. People would probably recommend you a Cooler Master case (HAF932/Scout/690/Cosmos/etc) but I'd say go for what ever may fit your needs (plus I don't like having a case that a lot of other people have
). Anyway...feel free to ask for help when you run into any trouble when building your computer. Btw...people with high-end computers are actually a high minority of the population of computer owners and you are going to be one to with that build to

Cpyder, welcome to ocn! I would also agree to take full advantage of that 37'' upgrading that video card to a gtx 275/285 or a 4890/5870 would be a great improvment. Also what type of storage drive/s are you using? The ssd after a os install won't leave alot of storage space. This is the time of year to pick up some great deals on 1tb drives.

Thanks for your help! I received the case last night and so far I'm loving it. It's very well thought out. The hard drive trays are very easy to work with. The fan speeds are adjustable (and they are 250 mm!). There is some cable management clips. It's pretty sturdy and doesn't seem overly fragile. The feet appear to be cheaper plastic but as long as you're careful when moving it, it shouldn't be a problem. I'll be writing a review on Newegg in the coming days after everything is up and running. Do you have the youtube link on the review? And as for the PSU, I purchased it on black Friday from Newegg for $100. Great price! Well see how it holds up.

I feel the video card is my weakest link right now. But I had to conserve somewhere for the time being. I'm not made of money.
Definitely will be upgraded in the future, but for now it should play my 1080p videos cleanly, right?

The SSD is mainly a boot drive, for most of my apps and 1 or 2 virtually mounted games. I have 4.75TB in external storage, but I would like to buy a few 1 or 1.5TB internal drives eventually.

I strongly suggest you go with EVGA for a video card

Also for your HDDs, are they SLC or MLC?

MLC
