A new space race is on, but astronauts need not apply for this mission, because well-heeled tourists will be filling the seats in the next generation of spaceships.

The Brits threw down the space gauntlet last week, unveiling a futuristic spaceplane called Skylon, that will be able to fly into space directly from an airport runway.

This followed news that aerospace giant Boeing had added its substantial might to the space tourism industry, with plans to develop a space-taxi service with a company called Space Adventures that organises space voyages and joy flights for the rich.

Although Space Adventures has already sent seven space tourists to a space station at a cost of about $40 million per seat, it is teaming up with companies like Boeing to bring down the cost of space travel and expand its services.

That's expensive, not sure whether I would pay 40 million dollars
