Advanced Micro Devices is in a number of tight spots at the moment, but the company is hopefully optimistic that its future "Bulldozer" Opteron processors due later this year will let it dig in and grab some desperately needed - and profitable - server market share from archrival Intel.

The first Bulldozer Opteron chips, the 16-core "Interlagos" processors, are still on track for production in the second quarter with a formal launch sometime in the third quarter, Vlad Rozanovich, director of the enterprise and public sector business at AMD, tells El Reg. These chips will be used in servers with two or four processor sockets and will plug into existing machines that use the G34 socket and that currently sport the 12-core "Magny-Cours" Opteron 6100s.

Not much in hard new details, but an interesting financial and tech analysis.

Glad its of interest guys, I feel much the same - there is so little news, that even reading about server Opterons feels like progress!

When are they expected to arrive? Same time as the 16 core server processors?

Did he say something wrong then? You're quoting him like he wrote something stupid, ironic really...

Incase you don't get it, he's saying the rumour is June, but since AMD say Q2 it could still be April or May as yet, we don't know.

This is good. Hopefully Intel will push out 2011 and Ivy Bridge and whatever else they are working on faster.

AMD please bring it! Your Graphics Cards are top notch now so bring back the good old days and make your CPUs the king of the hill once again.

Yes I really want AMD to have a win again

Doubt it could be April, we are in April right now and we haven't heard anything.

It all comes down to Mobo mfgs. If they keep making half-assed AMD boards, I'll be moving on to Intel, sad to say.
