Depends on the motherboard/chipset. Intel chipsets have a really small core, Via and nVidia chipsets have a rather large one. Usually there's just spring clips or screws that hold them down

Some also are put on with thermal tape that can be a Beotch to get off. If this is the case then just heat it up and try to wiggle it off, if it doesn't come off you can do the dental floss approach. heat it up and take dental floss and slide it between the chipset and the HS and use a saw like motion to sperate the thermal tape.

Enough to cover the entire chip with a very thin layer just like a processor's heatspreader
