Thinking of getting a e7400?

Hey, I'm withing 6 weeks of getting my new computer parts, and I can't decide on what CPU and Motherboard to get. Now, My budget is 300$ for Motherboard + CPU and I'm more then eager to overclock.

I found the e7400 for NewEgg.ca for 144$ I belive, and I was going to pair it with a DFI LP DK P45-T2RS PLUS.

If I were to get an Average chip with a good Heat sink.. (Maybe an Xigmatek s1283?) what kind of clocks do you think I could pull off?

You should be able to get 3.6 easy and even better, 3.8! Also, go for the s1283, that thing is awesome. Once you throw some AC5 on the bottom and lap the CPU, you will be good to go

What is stopping me from getting higher then that?

FSB wall? or is it just the limitations of the chip? Would the 11.5 Multiplier help me on this? or should I maybe just get a lower en e7x00?
I had tried few E7400s. One for my kid and two for other's rig. They are from 3.5G to 3.7G. With that says, few are doing good. Good luck.
why not get teh E8400?

there is only a 1mb chache diff between the E7x00 and the E5x00, so why does the E7x00 cost double what the E5x00 is? ur paying for the C2D name. the e5200 is a "pentium dual core" but they are both wolfdale chips. unless u have lots of programs that use SSE3 (new video editing/encoding i believe) instructions, the E5200 will do just as well. or spend $40 more and blow both of them away with the E8400.
I don't have the money for the 8400, as much as I'd like it.

I'm thinking about getting a PII 710, But I'm having a hard time picking out a motherboard.
I would suggest buy now, and upgrade later.

If going AMD, then a phenom/2 x2/3/4 and some high end board... probably a 790FX?

intel I would go with a P45 gigabyte board and a e5200 + xigmatek cooler for now... and upgrade to an e8400 or so later. going this route would be fun as well, you may never know if your chip may exceed your expectations.
E8400 + Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L = $309. From newegg.ca.
What are the key diffrences between p43's and p45's?

Acoma_Andy, I'm highly considering that..

P45's generally come with more options, connectors and expandability. P43 is very comparable, cheaper. As long as it's got what you need, I don't see any problem with going with the p43.

No idea actually. But it's a good overclocker nontheless. There is also a GA-EP45-DS3L, which is also cheap, but wasn't able to find it quickly. Maybe you can see if you can find it.

I second getting a E8400 or even a Q6600 over the E7400, keep an eye out in the for sale section I was able to get my E8500 for 150$ shipped and that was a while ago

edit: here is a E8500 for 137$ right here on ocn
http://www.overclock.net/sale/469309...-c0-137-a.html
cheaper and faster than the 144$ 7400

edit #2: didnt see that u were from canadia land. I was wondering why that e7400 you were looking at cost so much, any way still 144 cad is like what 111 usd you could get a way better chip for only 26$ more

hew doesnt have rep to buy from the classifieds here

i vote that u get a P45/43 board and an E5200. then upgrade to a E8400 or a Q6600 later. the E5200 will be plenty and its super cheap. if u want more, its cheaper to upgrade one piece at a time. just get a good board to base it off of. i recommend the p45 boards, either the DS3L, UD3R, or the UD3P from gigabyte. get the E5200 and upgrade later. those boards should support an E8400 or a Q6600 very well.
