I read his original post.

Although I don't agree with calling someone out in a dedicated thread, I think it's certainly worth replying since his response was valid.

He was referring to the millions of people and businesses on XP that are still running with no Microsoft Update support. He also mentioned that he hadn't updated Windows 7 in years, which there hasn't been a need to. Windows Update itself poses potential security threats if you consider.

Not all who play with fire will get burnt. Using no software to protect against malware/viruses is just like playing with fire.

If you're careful you can get by doing this just fine, but it's easy to slip up and get infected with something regardless of how careful you are since "safe" websites often get attacked, and even downloads from trusted sites can't always be trusted.
